Have Your Say! Should We Murder Homosexuals?

OKKKAY....
Response and social desirability biases have actually made this BBC discussion poll interesting! It seems that if you start with the proposition that maybe homosexuals should be slaughtered, you'll get a lot of people saying, "Um, NO?" and also some people saying, "Well, not slaughtered, but…." In this way, we can find out what people actually do think of the gays.

There's a poet who lives in Canada, named Bob Ezergailis, who thinks that "The death sentence for repeated transmission of HIV to others has been a long time coming, and is a necessity not an option." Awesome job on becoming a health policy expert, Bob.

There's Mohammed Begum, who lives in Birmingham, who thinks that "Homosexuality is already punishable by death in several successful countries including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan so why are we picking on Uganda?" Which… okay.

But if you want to get a better sense of what some people are thinking, you should actually read the comments on The Monitor, the independent (not state-owned) Ugandan newspaper, attached to an article headlined "Obama, Clinton reject Uganda's gay Bill."

I am so not buying that Filson bag.

It was between this one and the one about whites not poking their nose[s] "into our affairs," but I figured that came from a person turning his/her nose up at fellow Ugandans, or perhaps doing a bit of poking him/herself, so here:

Did someone just call Uganda a christian country! Ha ha…People are raping babies, infidelity in the news every day, HIV back to its original heights, ritual murders, growing crime rates!! I believe we 'Ugandans' are such a big bunch of hipocrites and as such….encourage government officials to trample on our rights since we ourselves dont even know the meaning of human rights. Next time its going to be a law on heteroxexual rights. Bed room issues are private and should not go to parliament. I dont think i'd like it if someone dictates who i should sleep with. That is personal preference and it should be such! Do you know how many men use their wives' anus' for sex? If u don't….shut up about this law. Our parliamentarians have simply run out of ideas yet there are better things to discuss!

I can think of nothing better than homosexuality to civilize these dusky savages.

USA! USA!

If Uganda had insightful gays like we do, maybe they would think twice before murdering them. http://bygonebureau.com/2009/12/16/best-new-blogs-of-2009/

This might seem biased, but the simple truth is that ignorance, and therefore hatred, is usually much more prevalent in places where the level of education is lower. Therefore, the BBC comments scare me MUCH more than the Moniter Online ones…

Pffffft. This should be a Yes/No poll.

"This is not an issue of "cultural sensitivity" it is a matter of an uneducated & backward nation pursuing unacceptable laws."

My friend spent the summer in Ghana and by time she got back she was basically 'fuck them.'She said they were misogynist, homophobic and yes, basically backwards. By the end she was outright just telling them what they believed was wrong and by the time she finished telling me her stories I was inclined to believe her.

I understand the history of repression, lack of education, etc. but my sense of cultural relativism only extends so far.

This is wretched.

HiredGoons (#603)

Also: "it is a controversial condition…" so these people are still sticking with the 'it's a mental illness' line? I love the arbitrary hodge podge of religion and science that can be picked at like a buffet or a Whitman's Sampler that can be used to prop up any bias.

"I believe in this 'science' but not that 'science' and GOD GOD GOD."

Fuck. This.

Yes but, my god, have you read the bbc poll comments as well? i would say a good 50% of them run something like "well they maybe they shouldn't be killed, but its unnatural and destroys our family values" etc etc. This from a civilized, enlightened western state.

Kataphraktos (#226)

I find your use of the terms "civilized" and "enlightened", and perhaps even "western" and "state", somewhat liberal.

HiredGoons (#603)

I was going to say…

krisC (#2,608)

perhaps i should have used quotation marks, but i felt the irony was implied…

myfanwy (#1,124)

Ugh. What was that article linked to last week? On Gawker? I thought it was aggravating that they viewed homosexuality as an import, brought in by colonizing forces.

I'm pissed that the more we rant and tell them they're backwards, the harder they'll resist because they're tired of being told what to do by Westerners. At any rate, there's cultural relativism, and then there's outright ignorance, and I think most modern anthropologists would not take a passive role in this situation.

myfanwy (#1,124)

"outright ignorance" should be "sitting idly by", "fiddling while Rome burns" etc. etc.

HiredGoons (#603)

heh, 'passive role.'

myfanwy (#1,124)

Look, I'm not proud of the (word) choices I made.

hman (#53)

More like Raid on Mentebbe, RIGHT?

So the choice is between condoms or killing the gays?

HiredGoons (#603)

Condoms are evil, state sanctioned mass murder* is pragmatic.

*homocide?

I hear it feels so much better to kill the gays.

On comment notes: "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

This is true. But that's probably only because there were no clothes in Eden.

Baroness (#273)

And who created Steve, then?

NeonTrotsky (#2,249)

Fun fact: "Ezergailis" is a Latvian name, and he is just another immigrant bringing the proud tradition of homophobia from his mother country to Canada…

Kataphraktos (#226)

As a hetero, I can tell you there are many reasons to stay as far away from Uganda as possible without touching upon the fatal consequences of buttsecks.

Are you saying that a love of Barbies & vintage hi-fi and also a penchant for lovely knit sweaters denotes somthing sinister?
I was, however, taken-in by the dreamy gaze (GAYS!) and Capote-esque pose.
