Good God, Fiddle While Rome's Newspapers Burn Much?

Extremely racist newspaper commenters are apparently the fault of sports blog Deadspin, which is "not a serious news-gathering source," says Chicago Sun-Times web editor. RELATED: Chicago Sun-Times web editor kind of an idiot, right?

"Something about the veil of anonymity brings out the worst in some people."

Mister Wood, next you'll be trying to convince me that the sky is blue and grass is green. I WON'T FALL FOR IT, NO I WON'T.

No one's accused the Sun-Times of being a
"serious news-gathering source" since the first Mayor Daley published his "comments" via tear gas and billy clubs.

Not since Royko died.

Good lord. Clearly, the slimy Cthulu-like mega-fungus of racist comments sections, sending out its hateful spores to the rest of the internets, is Politico. Duh.

sorry your heinous

The worst comments in the whole of the internet are made on newspaper or local TV news station websites. I don't know why, but it's true.

This is true. I also discovered that this is also a source for small town (regardless of actual size of the city) dirt--people emerge out of the woodwork when they see someone they went to high school with on the local news.

Totally.

Sites like Deadspin have commenters who meaningfully add to the conversation and local news sites do not. I don't know why it is either -- maybe better moderating, maybe appealing to more of a niche -- but it's pretty glaring. The comments on the local news sites here are uniformly awful.

checkout the comments on 27east.com, for example. Think the Hamptons is posh? Uh, no.

Even too stupid to realize that he's the billionth person to "discover" the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory?

"Are there really that many racist people out there? Would they really say such appalling things in everyday conversation?"

This guy needs to step out of the news room once in a while.

Idiot, charmingly naive - shades of grey, etc.

The Sun-Times actually has more racist comments than the right leaning Tribune paper. The rube effect.

Maybe he's just upset that Deadspin and sites modeled after it spent the bulk of this past decade systematically obviating and destroying most all of writers' other options for regular employment?

KarenUhOh

I'm obviating right now and I can tell you, it's put me in a pretty pissy mood.

Please, enough with the Gawker log-rolling? It's beneath you.

Deadspin and Wonkette have by far the best commenters of any blogs, ever. If only I gave a shit about sports or politics.

sigerson

agreed. DUAN, for example, is often more entertaining than The Tonight Show, Sportscenter and SNL/MadTV combined.

Each of the first ten comments on this from Deadspin commenters made me laugh out loud.

Mr. Wood is pretty far up on his high horse for a newspaper whose sports page is 50% ads for the finest strip clubs and adult bookstores the south suburbs have to offer. No one should have to risk reading "All Nude" and "Paul Konerko" on the same page.
