President Barack Obama attends a ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del., Oct. 29, 2009, for the dignified transfer of 18 U.S. personnel who died in Afghanistan."There's been a lack of acknowledgement by our president in understanding what it is that the American military provides in terms of, obviously, the safety, the security of our country. I want him to acknowledge the sacrifices that these individual men and women, our sons, our daughters, our moms, our dads, our brothers and sisters are providing this country to keep us safe."
—Sarah Palin tells Fox News' Greta Von Susteren that President Obama needs to give more respect to the troops.

This whole ultra-right wing republican plan of just making shit up is working far better than it should. Stupid downfall of fact-checking newspapers and rise of cable news networks…

I had almost gotten to noon, without feel a deep, visceral Palin-related rage.
    Thanks a lot, Balk.

how is Support the Troops still a talking point? I thought the ubiquity of those yellow car magnets meant that everyone already supports them, or at the least, knows where to buy a car magnet.

I wince every time I hear someone refer to the USA as the "Homeland." Who started that shit? Bush? It sounds way too much like the Nazi Germany "Fatherland" or the Communist Russia "Motherland". Am I taking crazy pills here?

I feel the same way about flag pins on the lapel. I used to laugh at the Soviet premiers and such that wore those, as if their grasp upon power was so tenuous they needed trinkets of eye candy to let the populace know that they were on board with the party line.

I agree 100% – for some reason I thought the term originated with a member of the Democratic Party, but a search suggests the origin was in 1997 in a document from the Pentagon:

Of note – the sense of the article is that the term wouldn't make it . . .

Well, there is one group of people for whom much of the North American continent is, or was, a homeland. It is especially at this time of year, when we rub their noses in it with gluttonous feasting and shopping, that some of them must wish their ancestors had poisoned the water supply and let those white devils perish. Homeland, indeed. Happy National Day of Mourning. Let's eat.

What exactly would she like him to do?

  7. HiredGoons [#603]

Well, it's a good thing that she DOES NOT HOLD OFFICE OR ANY KIND OF POLITICAL POSITION ANYMORE.

Where has she been, on Mars?

    Oops. Rhetorical question.

The first thing that came to mind was that old quote regarding Sen. Joe McCarthy …

"At long last … Have you no sense of decency left, ma'am?"

Not to let the facts get in the way of a good soundbite, Sarah, but Obama's expanded veteran's benefits immensely, and is focused on BRINGING THE TROOPS HOME. This, to me, displays a lot more concern and respect for the troops than your buddy Bush, who treated them like playthings and a weapon for settling his own personal vendettas.
