If you were awake at 5 a.m. because, say, you were caught in the great airline horrors of the snow times followed by the JFK Delta plane skidding off the runway times, which closed down that airport and sent a ripple effect of delays and cancellations across the country, you would have seen the bizarre sight of New York City gripped in a low-lying fog. It was rather twinkly and luxurious actually! Or if you are awake now, this morning, perhaps you have seen the nutzo downpour, with the tornado-green sky over Manhattan and the deep grey over Brooklyn, trash and bottles flying and umbrellas breaking everywhere. But it gets better! Perhaps you’re planning your outfit for tonight’s “Girls” premiere party, in which case you should be clued in that your throwback electroclash outfit had actually better be made of piles of furs and blankets. The funny thing about “Girls” is that it’s set in an endless Brooklyn summer. It seems like, in all three of its seasons, everyone’s always clammy and under-clad and in need of showers, and winter never comes for our sad little narcissists. So as the wind picks up all night and the temperature begins to drop towards 11 degrees, we’ll let a thousand cases of millennial hypothermia bloom. At least we will survive them.
2013 Is Dead, Are You Next?

Ugh, another fucking year. If this is your first day back in calendar 2014, you’ve probably got a bunch of “real” work to do before you can return to your regular diet of pretending to focus on whatever the hell it is that you need to get it up each day to feign interest for while secretly surfing the Internet. It’s a terrible existence, but at the end there’s death, so really I don’t have any other tokens of comfort for you. That said, once you’re settled in here’s a bunch of stuff you may have missed from our year-end review: crying at your desk, least annoying metal albums, lesbians, restraining orders, topless Geraldo, enjoyable interviews, crazy cats, clever movie violence, terrifying European television, backdoor porn, Rihanna, tragic style, fan fiction, explosions in the sky, parking in Los Angeles and expensive workouts. Already read them? READ ’EM AGAIN. You’re not the only one having a hard time getting back to the grind.

Russian Sky Explosion Maximum Power

In Chelyabinsk the men are tough. So tough there is a meme among Russians depicting the tough men from Chelyabinsk acting out their audacious toughness: shouldering a dead horse through a peat bog, using a chainsaw to shave, having sex with a giant scorpion. When the meteor 60-feet-wide and weighing more than the Eiffel Tower shot towards Chelyabinsk at 41,000 miles-per-hour and burst into a fireball brighter than the sun, the tough men of Chelyabinsk looked up at the sky and cursed quietly. When the fireball exploded 14 miles above Chelyabinsk it did so with a force 30 times that of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The subsequent shockwave shattered a million square feet of glass in the city, the heat a momentary summer on a frigid February morn. The men in Chelyabinsk shrugged and carried on with their day.
The dashcams were proof. The dashcams recorded the whole damn thing. A streaking star in the pre-dawn light that begins innocently enough, shimmering like something you’d wish upon, then turns missile, expanding and burning into, yes, it’s a sun — it’s a new exploding sun in the sky and now it’s, oh boy, now a small piece of it is careening towards the horizon line, towards earth, towards impact. Aleksandr Ivanov, a tough man in Chelyabinsk, mutters a Russian word that sounds to an English ear very much like, “Unbelievable.” Then he drives on. His dashcam video was one of the most popular. There were plenty of others. There was a whole bit on the “Daily Show” about it.
Dmitry Simanovsky, a Russian writer and translator, hipped me to the “tough men from Chelyabinsk” meme, and called the meteorite event “the best ‘life imitating art’ act ever I think.”
I found Simanovsky and a slew of other savvy Russian media-types through my friend Trina, who is from New Jersey and practices law in Moscow. I wanted to know about how the Chelyabinsk meteor was remembered there — there being Russia, generally, but Moscow and St. Petersburg, mainly. From the capitals, Chelyabinsk “feels marginally closer than, say, Wisconsin,” one of them told me, even though it’s a city of 1.1 million. I had some vague notion, looking back on the year, that the meteor had been lost to more recent out-of-the-blue, otherworldly events, such as the new Beyoncé album. The meteor felt very distant, geographically and chronologically, and I wondered if for Russians it might be the same. I wondered if the dashcams had anything to do with that; that if by documenting the meteor so thoroughly we had, in the process, demythologized it, or hadn’t even given it a chance to become a myth. Also, the existence of video cameras on the dashboards of millions of Russians almost immediately became more Internet-interesting than a many ton spacerock the size of a semi truck exploding terrifically over a rather large Russian city. Besides the men in Chelyabinsk, did other Russians shrug at the meteor after cursing quietly? Oh yes. Yes they did.
The TV journalist Andrey Loshak wrote me to say that “interest in the meteorite was much stronger among foreigners, and for me personally it was interesting to see, in the context of the meteor, how they (foreigners) see us. That is, due to the meteor, I saw Russians from an outsider’s view and, well, I learned something about Americans, too. You (Americans) are, of course, remarkably meticulous and inquisitive. You (Americans) immediately started to enquire as to why we drive with dashcams, and also marveled at how cold-blooded Russians are — a UFO is flying right above a person, yet he continues on driving to work or clearing the snow as if nothing happened. In general, the meteor story aroused/excited America much more than it did Russia, alas. I kept waiting for a convincing take (on the event) to appear linking it to with Slavik Chebarkulsko but never came across one. That and linking it to another story dear to my heart — the Kryshtym dwarf.”
Andrey Miroshnichenko, another journalist, emailed to say that “it seems the meteor explosion has taken its proper place in history — it is neither forgotten, nor fresh in mind… at that place of public memory where they deserve to be.” Which was something like: oh, that thing. “But we have had a lot to remember,” Miroshnichenko added. It’s true. In 2013 Russia made alcohol advertising, homosexual propaganda, and insulting religious believers illegal — that’s just stuff the country banned. There are Olympics coming up, protests in Ukraine, and a political prisoner suddenly free. A reminder of the meteor came last month when a popular television host named Arkady Mamontov said the Chelyabinsk event was a warning from the Lord God that gay marriage is an abomination. He also said that “Western sodomites are trying to sneak into Russia and mobilize a protest movement among our own perverts.”
Miroshnichenko, like Loshak, was delighted at our (American) fascination with Russian dashcams.
It “was the subject of pride for Russians. And… is the significant part of the ‘meteorite legacy’ in public memory,” he wrote. (Miroshinchenko also wrote an essay, which he just finished translating, titled “Mediarite Over Russia, or Sick of the Internet” about how the spread of misinformation in the hours after the streaking space rock was a result of our modern state of media, reacting “to events happening on the Internet rather than in Chelyabinsk.”) “For Russians,” he concluded, “having the evidence of unusual events recorded via dash cam is very ordinary stuff. Probably, the value of secret in people’s perception is just going down… Probably, the abundance of dash cams makes us, Russians, less curious or impressionable. By the way, this conclusion may fit to all contemporary people — thanks to the omnipresence of media, people now have too many routine evidences of what was a thrilling miracle in the previous days.”

On June 30, 1908, just after 7 a.m., the sky over Siberia split open and out poured fire. Another meteor, at least ten times as large and powerful as Chelyabinsk’s, was exploding. A witness described it 22 years later:
The split in the sky grew larger, and the entire northern side was covered with fire. At that moment I became so hot that I couldn’t bear it, as if my shirt was on fire; from the northern side, where the fire was, came strong heat. I wanted to tear off my shirt and throw it down, but then the sky shut closed, and a strong thump sounded, and I was thrown a few metres. I lost my senses for a moment, but then my wife ran out and led me to the house. After that such noise came, as if rocks were falling or cannons were firing, the earth shook, and when I was on the ground, I pressed my head down, fearing rocks would smash it. When the sky opened up, hot wind raced between the houses, like from cannons, which left traces in the ground like pathways, and it damaged some crops.
The Tunguska Event felled some 80 million trees across 830 square miles. Its primary blast zone left the impression of a colossal butterfly with a 43 mile wingspan. At night, for days afterward, the skies over Asia and Europe glowed as light passed through ice particles, which had formed while so much meteoric turbulence rippled through the upper atmosphere.
Crazy shit happens with relative consistency in Russia and the bar for incredible is incredibly high. Its people are ready to be underwhelmed by disaster. Gleb Borisov, a film critic and bartender, put it best, calling this “a sort of apocalyptic consciousness” Russians carry with them. A supermarket roof collapses and the response is “I knew something like that would happen, what did you expect?” he said. A dam breaks. “Well, how long did you really think it would stand?” Russians live “mentally prepared for the fact that tomorrow may only be worse: If we don’t drown, then we’ll burn.” There is a “deeply bred indifference.” Compared to Americans, all Russians are men of Chelyabinsk.
Which is why it is so perfect that the dashcams became the bigger story. Everyday life in Russia is even more extraordinary than a ball of fire come from outer space exploding upon the horizon. “Yeah, sure, some object fell from the sky,” Borisov said, but, he countered, the ultimate question is if “this story will be found somewhere near the video of that Russian tank crossing the highway at full speed.”

You Can And Should Judge A Culture By Its Fan Fiction

The first truth of fan fiction is that a good chunk of it is terrible. The second, third, and fourth truths all involve sex. But the fifth truth of fan fiction is that it is often the best way to understand fans — under the kind of pressure and passion that is required for someone to write 30,000-plus words about an anthologic dramedy set in a women’s prison (for free and for a few dozen comments), a kind of reality takes shape in which it is possible to understand the better part of buzz. Like a funhouse mirror (usually a useless metaphor), fan fiction isn’t just entertaining for what it exaggerates, but for what it reveals in the exaggeration.
2013 was, obviously, the most important year we’ve ever experienced in pop culture. What say the fan fics?
“Arrested Development”
This was some other kitten. Tony couldn’t be a kitten. Tony was a person, and his boyfriend, and Tony was supposed to be up making donuts or styling his hair or getting ready to throw him out. A cat couldn’t throw him out, that part was good. But he couldn’t make donuts either, or kiss him, and crap, a kitten was a small animal. GOB basically killed small animals, not on purpose or anything, but he really wasn’t good with them. Their last fight had been about killing a small animal.

A hand reached over and took hers, Kowalski was back, “It’s been an honor serving with a Mission Specialist like you doctor.” Ryan just smiled. She knew he wasn’t truly there, but the words were comforting anyway. Closing her eyes one last time a laugh burst from her lips, she was going to see her daughter. Her little girl.

But the knight just leans down and brazenly licks the head of Francis’ cock, still staring into his eyes.

Places I Parked In Los Angeles In 2013

ArcLight Hollywood, roof level. Grade: A+

The predominant strategy for parking in Los Angeles is to find the closest available space to the entrance of wherever it is you’re going. This is flawed thinking, at least when parking at the ArcLight Hollywood. Drive, drive, around the back, all the way up to the top. Let everyone else waste the precious minutes of their lives searching for the 24 spaces left on P3 that are promised to them by a digital display just inside the main gate. Get to the roof and you will be rewarded with acres of empty spots, not to mention some of the best views in the City. My dream is to put a restaurant on this roof. People would propose marriage there. And it would be even happier than a normal proposal because there’s so much parking.
Animal Medical Center, Van Nuys. Grade: A

This is a veterinarian who has valet parking. Necessary? Who cares!
City of Santa Monica, Parking Structure 4. Grade: C-

There are several identical parking structures around the Third Street Promenade and they are, collectively, some of the most perplexing examples of any kind of architecture of any era. Parking in one of these lots is like driving through an M.C. Escher drawing. You do not pass the same spaces on your way down from the top as you do on your way up. How this happens, I can’t explain, since I did not study quantum mechanics. This Möbius strip of concrete is further complicated by several phantom middle aisles that teleport you to seemingly random other parts of the garage, leading inevitably to a foreign exit on a different street from the one you initially came in from. Abandon all understanding of physics and space-time, ye who enter here. And be careful which elevator you use to get back to your car. You may have parked on level 6, but the wrong elevator will take you to a different level 6. And, possibly, 1953.
The Grove, anytime in December. Grade: D-

I went to The Grove on a Saturday to buy holiday presents. This was a bad idea. There were so many cars that it took an hour to make it through every level up to the top, only to realize there were no open spaces at all. It took another hour to make my way back down to the exit. Then the cashier charged me $2 because I didn’t get a validation, even though I never left my car. The only reason this isn’t an F is because it’s partially my own damn fault for going to The Grove on a Saturday in December.
Cardiff Avenue Parking Structure, Culver City. Grade: A

All the levels are named after movies. It’s delightful! I recommend The Karate Kid.

I would advise you never to park in West Hollywood but that’s a bit unnecessary because there are no parking spaces in West Hollywood for you to even consider. Every side street is permit-only now, and if you ever find an open metered spot on Sunset or Santa Monica you should put that up on Craigslist immediately as it will no doubt fetch you a pretty Bitcoin. But here’s a pro tip for you: just behind the strip mall on the south side of Sunset, the string of buildings with the Chin Chin and Le Petit Four, is a parking lot of such monumental proportions that you could live in an RV there for six months and nobody would notice. The lot serves maybe a dozen storefronts and no guards are really keeping track, so just park there and walk to wherever you’re going. You won’t get towed and you won’t get a ticket. This is one of my favorite Los Angeles secrets, but I’m fine parting with it, because I never plan on going to West Hollywood ever again.
Warner Brothers Studios, Lot A. Grade: A

All the levels are named after Looney Tunes characters. Adorable! I recommend Wile E. Coyote.
Trader Joe’s, Silver Lake. Grade: F-

Complaints about Trader Joe’s parking lots are so common as to be on the verge of cliché. But when you look deeper, you become struck with awe at how remarkably bad they are, and how each one is bad in exactly the same way as its brothers.
Each Trader Joe’s parking lot has at least two entrances that put the drivers who use one at loggerheads with the drivers using the other. Each has at least two separate zones of parking that look nothing like each other, connected in a string-of-pearls configuration with a single lane bottleneck connecting them. And each lot is notable for its massive size and inefficient allocation of spaces. Sure, you can play football in certain parts of a Trader Joe’s lot. But you can only fit three cars.
Once you notice the trends, you start to believe this must be intentional, a diabolical experiment in psychology that somehow primes us to buy boxed cereal knockoffs and cashew butter. Perhaps it’s a Soviet thing, this architecture designed to control. Who is this “Joe?” What is he trading? Sadly, you’ll never even get to ask, because you’re too busy fighting your fellow man for a place to leave your car.
Sunset Gower Studios, Gordon Parking Structure. Grade: F

This is commonly understood to be the worst parking garage of any studio backlot. It holds, I don’t know, six hundred cars? But that doesn’t stop them from packing in two thousand plus at any given moment. They have valets on hand, but not to park your car for you. These valets will direct you to a spot where you block at least four other cars from moving, any they take your keys so they can play automobile Tetris with your Prius if someone who got there before you needs to leave before you get back. Allow an extra half hour on either end of your meeting if you need to park here, or just find a metered space on Fountain.
International Creative Management. Grade: A

ICM has the best talent agency parking lot car wash in Los Angeles. It’s even better than any of the shopping mall parking lot car washes, like the Elite Auto Spa in Westfield Century City or the overpriced Grove Auto Spa in the parking garage at The Grove. And don’t even compare it to the parking lot car wash at The Parking Spot by the airport! That’s like a ten-year-old and a bucket compared to the ICM parking lot car wash.

2013 Style: A Tragedy In Four Acts

Fashion is for either the very young or the very old; style is for everyone in between. I do not function participatorily in any fashion polity, which is another way of saying I live in LA. If you are a dude here, you take one of two looks: Patrick Bateman or Christopher Robin. If you abstain, grown women will come up and ask you if you smell, neither knowing nor caring that style is an outsider’s game.
A lot of what passes for street style here is liminal and kind of en-route in nature, as most of it is confined to the subway. People think public transit in LA is a bunch of bullshit and they’re right, but for the wrong reason: it’s not that it doesn’t work, it’s that it keeps the stylish people — Croatian tourists, African-American skaters, FIDM students — out of visibility. Since you definitely don’t take Metro to yoga, all the style is literally underground. That’s impressive in a year when the underground became a lot less etiolated with the further rise of LA brands like Jeffrey Campbell and Nasty Gal, not to mention Beyoncé’s dancers swiveling in Chromat at the Super Bowl.
The girls I glanced at the most often at Amoeba, which is where the less senescent townsfolk often gather, typically bore the same highwaist-shorts/croptop cross that girls in Baton Rouge and other overseas places similarly hefted, all year long. No ages were exempt from this crisis, and there is no end in sight.
Late in the year Rihanna either caused a stir or stirred a cause by announcing her #ghetto #goth phase. Multiple sources accused her of gripping the term from a New York party called Ghe20 Goth1k (am I spelling that right?????), the business plan of which diffuses ‘very white and very black’ elements of street style into a unified theory of gender-confused social-climbing. I suppose the LA version of this complex is Freak City, a fashion line and occasional record label that fetishizes Fubu, Versace, and the hair and makeup in the A$ap crew’s videos. LA’s most avant-garde party is A Club Called Rhonda, where anyone not willing to fully commit goes in Lime Crime lipstick and designer mesh tanktops instead of alien facepaint or handmade tulle pixie-wings. Rihanna, meanwhile, rocked double denim on Rodeo Drive and cameoed as a moll in the video for “Fashion Killa,” a sort of literal laundry list of highest-end labels. It’s also the year’s most addictive track.

If you didn’t watch Model Files, an extension of the VFiles brand, you missed a vitally unserious investigative series about a bunch of boys who work in fashion proper but with “Viva La Bam” vibes. A frequent guest star was Cole Mohr, the skater-y Marc Jacobs model whose intentionally shitty tattoos and snide Kevin McAllisterisms slay Korean fangirls on Instagram daily. Mohr and his on/off girlfriend, an art student named Susannah Liguori, are perhaps the bride and groom on top of the NYC trash-scene cake — the NYC trash scene being a personal storm of found objects up to and including cutoff hoodies, puffy jackets with beer logos, and the egregious Adidas slides that, admittedly, Grimes and Miley were seen in well before year’s end.
The kinds of hyphenates who populate the VFiles/Hood by Air locus typically wouldn’t be caught dead in couture; Tyler Benz, senior editor of VFiles, copped a novelty Antiques Roadshow t-shirt and watched the IG likes roll in. You could call them hipsters if you wanted to condescend. Really it’s just original grunge, items so ugly you wouldn’t think to thrift them, and as much real fun as being the brokest person in first class.
Like being paleo or Gwyneth Paltrow, thrifting is a lifestyle. I cannot speak to the New York circuit but in Los Angeles all the good things are at Goodwill, if you’re willing to pay 70 dollars for a peak-period Gucci blazer instead of $7 in the Valley or somewhere deeper. A pinging sensation of itchy glamour attends thrifting in LA; at the various Goodwills drug-ravaged ex-babes can be reliably found thumbing thru the racks, their careers somewhere in the faded furs. There but for the grace of Goodwill.
3. The 90s Called

I knew 1998 [because I am old] and 2013, you’re no 1998! 2013 was the year every insolent twenty-year-old girl Netflix’d “Ally McBeal” over breakfast and saw Calista Flockhart’s pajamas as clouds in her coffee — the year cybergoth, grunge’s methadone, seized custody of our children in a dark-neon vise. The most relevant music video to 2013’s purposes, “Ava Adore” by Smashing Pumpkins, turned 15 this year and its lush, bespoke goth was recommissioned by shrewd personalities like Sky Ferreira and Lorde. Hedi Slimane photographed leftover luminaries Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson for his St. Lauren rework; both Manson and Love toured in 2013 but not, sadly, as MansonLove.
Elsewhere, fall television sent Adam Scott on “Parks + Rec” and James Wolk on “The Crazy One”s to Fox Mulder’s hairstylist from 1996 for the tight sides and skinny sideburns my friend’s dad said meant you were gay. Recall that, Knope!
Our never-royal Lorde appeared in a few tabloids with a boyfriend whose race became a thing, for idiots. Nevermind: the choker and tie-dye bikini from the series was so #ninetieskid as to deserve some ridicule, except Kanye went and slipped the same tie-die shades into the “Bound 2” video. I fuck with Ye as much as anyone but no way he was making Lisa Frank net art in 1996. Lorde is at least living those spacy, hypnagogic years in the culture like it’s her first time.
Some of it went too far. For instance, you can wear saltwater sandals but you better be built like Soo Joo. Skechers in all their hobbling forms began to be seen again on the screwed-up feet of the vexed, and there were whispers, rumors, of bleached hair on boys. I wore a snowboarding sweater from fall 1999 to a screening of Interview With The Vampire at Hollywood Forever cemetery and the girl who asked me for a light didn’t even ask if I wanted to go to Taco Bell, which is the most 90s fast-food. So it’s not like everyone gets it. On the other hand, the 1998 Chicago Bulls influenced an entire generation and not even Dennis Rodman in North Korea alters the image of Michael Jordan in a Nike beret.
4. Men And Women Without Hats

The sportswear revival’s nastiest jag was all the overdetermined headwear, which set both genders ablaze in jaunty chapeaux. Every relevant venue was a sea of snapbacks, grouped with big earrings, red lipstick and 501s on girls, hoodies and trainers on boys. But beanies were the worst. There are girls who work fashion retail, when they’re not filling post-structuralist prescriptions in undergrad hell, who I believe would be buried in their Chanel beanies. Rob Sheffield once described N’Sync as dressing like elderly dentists’ wives on vacation in Boca Raton; these girls dress like those dentists’ wives’ grandchildren. Why not throw on cloggish open-toed flatforms with your Adidas track pants? Your beanie that says 2013 on it says it all and nothing much, simultaneously. Unfortunately it is now the dismal practice of the yolo generation not to owe it all to Herbal Essences and their pillow, as did their forebears, but to abdicate all responsibility for haircare. Just wear a hat!
In dire cases, the beanie or snapback served as the topmost quarter of the top half of a football uniform. Girls dressing like boys does not bother me excessively, but I’m not sliding an Atlanta Falcons jersey over the head of anyone. Smells of sweat and liniment are triggers for me, even when merely associative. Women shouldn’t dress for men unless they want to, but shouting out Jamal Anderson is just overkill. The Dirty Bird is yet another 1998 artifact, the burial of which is better undisturbed.

Rihanna I Would Kill 4 U

It is fascinating to consider the gigantic omissions mainstream media makes in recapping the past year with delicious “Best of [insert year].” These are omissions of substance, but they are not often included in the discourse of popular culture. They are experiences about losing. Losing jobs, lovers, apartments. The losers’ agency — or lack thereof — is manifested in perhaps deciding a preference to “lose,” guesstimating the long-term result will be worth the sacrifice. Of course, other times exogenous factors create a shared reality where you — and this certainly includes me — have limited power in changing one’s conditions. These are the stories about getting broken up with, getting evicted from a home and — by far the worst of all! — getting fired from a money-producing position. To grasp the impossibility of having it all, please consider the Worst Application of a Venn Diagram, Ever, which I built using the empirical evidence of my entire extended network.

Therefore, to belong in one of the above circles and lose your position in it leads to reasonable agitation. How will you re-enter a circle? Will it be the same one?
The worst condolences arrive in phrases that encourage an unhealthy re-evaluation of one’s self, one that is not necessarily true but makes hardships easier to overcome. Things that sound like “Well, you didn’t really like that job anyway” or “S/he wasn’t the right one.” The idea of substantially reorganizing our own understandings of reality according to drastic changes that have occurred might be a comfortable coping mechanism for modern survival. But it might also be wrong. Therefore, sometimes there is value to our refusal to “move on.” If we were able to re-enter new circles easily, how authentic was our satisfaction while we belonged to the one(s) we lost? Our stubbornness and perseverance exist for a reason: knowing when to not hear others is important.
At the same time, others’ views do matter, even if we have attained the power to not care about them. The views of others’ mattered at one point: they were integral in forming the shared memories that constructed our understanding of the world and our place in it. The multitude of layers that go into creating shared memories is infinite, and that is why “reality” has always been suspect as a concept. The ambivalence exists even in the shared cultural saga that today comprises our history: we don’t know how much resonance was lost over time and which parts were exaggerated, and to what extent.

We encounter differences in the creative representation and recreation of the public narratives that we think of as history. The same “thing” can translate to different memories among different people. In a similar fashion, the way we understand popular culture differs, according to the way we approach it and analyze it. That is why I asked so many people I met for the first time over the last year: “What’s your favorite song from ‘Unapologetic’?” It is an easy strategy to tinker with someone’s views and beliefs without appearing elitist or offensive. It is harmless to ask, yet the responses it renders can be enlightening.
From my perspective as a media consumer, I gained the most over the past year from Rihanna. But before revealing my own personal reasons for awarding the year to Rih, it is important to contextualize the way she is understood as a public person by others. A carefully selected group of exceptional individuals — whose credentials are further analyzed in 1.2 — received the following questions via email:
1. what is your favorite rihanna song?
2. what do you think rihanna does exceptionally, if anything? (sing, dance, twerk etc)
3. what pisses you off about rihanna, if anything? (name, event, incident etc)
4. do you think rih is smart? (y/n, maybe & feel free to expand)
The responses I received are presented in their exhaustive entirety below. Using these four questions as empty blocks to be filled by others facilitated my identification of the recurring themes in the construction of Rihanna’s public persona. Additionally, it enabled me to swiftly proceed in celebrating the contradictions that became apparent through the Rih-poll I conducted.
My endeavor to give constraints and limitations to people’s interpretation of Rihanna in the form of succinct questions ultimately yielded the expected result. The exact thing someone identified as her best attribute someone else considered her biggest flaw. The frequency with which this phenomenon appears in the graph “HER ATTITUDE RIHANNA” demonstrates why she is such a divisive public figure.

My graphical representation of the responses crystallizes the points where most people tend to agree. Rih’s best quality in the majority’s eyes is what I am going to define as her “badassness.” Her worst quality, according to the poll, is her public love life and its repeated inclusion of Rihanna’s Ex-Boyfriend.
GOOD GIRL GONE BADGALRIRI
Rih’s badassness is her biggest commercial tool. It is how she appeals to the broad public, representing a sort of “do whatever the fuck you want” brand of feminism while being highly prolific by constantly releasing new music. Beyond the new music, new videos are directed to accompany them, and by extension, so are looks. Adding public appearances, concert-tours and fashion engagements, Rih is the definition of a millennial pop star: a fully diversified brand. Riding or provoking trends, it is obvious that her creative team is excellent in the art of cool-hunting and ceaselessly provoking the audience. She is also kind of queer — if not, then queer-friendly, (in)famously enjoying the company of female strippers and partying hard, never pretending to be pious.
Rihanna refuses to behave in the traditional manner celebrities do when it comes to handling their brand and their relationship with their fans. She doesn’t try too hard to please them, or at least she doesn’t try hard to avoid issues of potential controversy and turmoil. She has consistently demonstrated a lack of hesitation in putting up with people’s shit, which is refreshing. Sometimes she responds to people’s negative comments on Instagram in a petty manner, and it is amazing:

The reason I find that amazing is because it demonstrates that she does not feel obliged to be a classy, nice person in order to respond to people’s expectations. I think that has been a helpful trait for her to maintain a sense of sanity, as she has become a huge media sensation, and one of the most popular people on all social media platforms: she can act selfishly and ignore the projections a massive audience is sending towards her.

Hearing about how amazing Rihanna’s Insta was, I was one of the last people to add yet another tragic social media badge on the online shame wall that will become my legacy when I die. I even named my account in honor of Rih. My willingness to indulge in Instagram, or at least try it, was directly linked to Rihanna. As an adult, this is an embarrassing confession to make, even if I thankfully remain younger than Rihanna. And so is my admiration for someone who is not above being petty.
WE FOUND (TYRANNICAL) LOVE
My actual admiration stems from even darker an origin, the very exact action for which people find her reprehensible. Specifically, her decision to disregard all responsibility she carried as a role-model to young women and remain stubbornly in love with Rihanna’s Ex-Boyfriend. I was certainly not happy for the repercussions linked to her decision to first recognize, and subsequently ignore, feeling a need to live up to public expectations. But I was happy to see someone else dangerously stuck on their first young love, even if I did not want them to work together as a couple.
You see, if I had to imagine Rihanna’s version of the Worst Application of a Venn Diagram, Ever, it would look like this.

Yet, this has not been the case for her in recent times, and here she was with only the ⅔ of the circles intersecting.
Naturally, I am aware that the way I chose to understand this chunk of popular culture was linked to how I felt about all the times I had gone back to someone I thought to be the love of my life. The ugliness of the drug-highs from drugs I never thought I would do and the calls to the police and the fading trust that would never allow for whatever we had to be love again. But I had to go back to understand that. I had to learn by myself, and not through others, not to believe in tyrannical love. To realize that I was wrong in letting myself believe everything would be worthless if that one red circle didn’t work out.

Looking at Rih’s Best Song table, the clear victory of “We Found Love” triggers my curiosity about the shared memory to which it might be connected. Could the shared memory be that of the video accompanying the song? I remember the nihilistic prowess of the sound coming from cars during a summer, their roofs or windows open. The bravado of blasting the song connoted an attitude almost celebrating youth through destruction: “we are young, let’s fuck ourselves over completely.” If anywhere, in New York City it resonates.

The all or nothing all the time mentality suits the dangerous and dark persona Rih has presented to the public since Rihanna’s Ex-Boyfriend beat her at the Grammys. The intro of the video provocatively declares: “you almost seemed ashamed, that someone could be that important. That without them you are nothing.” The grotesque dependency described here is one I can relate to, or at least a former version of me that was more self-destructive and did — a lot — more drugs believed to be true. The truth is the song’s beat continues to do two things to me: it gives me a feeling of intense emptiness for having been unable to find again someone who made me feel the way my first love did, and it makes me want to do a dangerous amount of drugs, because fuck it, I am young. But then at the end, the sight of a mattress without any bedsheets reminds me that I should want more for me. That the intensity and the drama is not worth it; that is not where the meaning of human connection lies.
Coming across the titles of the respondents’ favorite Rihanna songs I remembered that I used to not like her. I used to find her annoyingly prepackaged and modeled ala mini-Beyonce and hated a lot of the songs that launched her career, usually songs featuring an annoyingly repetitive pattern in lyric terms, be it “-ella” or “nananana.” This instigated an internal quest: when was it that I became intrigued by Rihanna first? It was with her sixth album, “Talk That Talk.”
A brief chronology of my growing appreciation for the artist is provided, conveying that I have grown to like her more and more over time, a sentiment which contradicts the general consensus of music critics.





The release of “Unapologetic” was a shockingly blunt provocation. It made it obvious that the performer had rekindled a romantic relationship nobody wanted to see materialize. Rihanna’s Ex-Boyfriend had once again managed to collaborate with her on her new album, and the song was entitled a controversial “Nobody’s Business.” In reality, they both made it all our business, which felt unnecessary. It is important to note that since the time the album was first released in November 2012, Rihanna’s Ex-Boyfriend became her ex-boyfriend, once again. Thus far, it seems like there is no romantic return pending. Following the end of their relationships, tweets were tweeted and social media was used vengefully. Now social media will forever document how they were both unapologetically portraying teenage levels of maturity following what they will probably put behind as their first young love. Rihanna vitriolically hinted at her professional superiority through Instagram. Meanwhile Rihanna’s Ex-Boyfriend asserted — via Twitter — that: “She’s not mine if she’s everybody else’s.”

Overall, Rihanna’s team has succeeded in crafting an image of femininity that is feasible for her to live up to as a young woman who sometimes likes to act indulgently. It is unlike the typical “dual femininity” mold we come across when considering previous female pop-stars, a mold in which to stop being virginal translates to being a slut. Shying away from these two extremes, Rihanna’s current position is empowering for being both sex-positive and simultaneously giving her the creative agency to be much more than the typical female pop-singer.

It seems that Rih is particularly invested in the fashion industry, and has gradually worked towards her immersion as she collaborated with River Island on creating an eponymous fashion line. Rihanna for River Island was heavily promoted online and available to buy at our local Opening Ceremony! Certainly, the biggest selling point is the attachment of the Rihanna brand to the clothes: they are clothes that she created because they are exactly what she wants to wear, or at least that’s what she has to say to promote her products. She also acknowledges that she is not the person who does all the work, crediting Adam Selman (pictured above) as her designer.
It must be amazing to be such a commodification-generator: to just need be to have a unique value that maximizes the fiscal potential of projects, brands, firms. As it must be awful, too. You can never know for sure when your surroundings treasure your presence selflessly, rather than parasitically. But the same sort of ambiguous balance is the one subsiding when one enters a love affair of dependency.
BEEN ON?
I remember being completely uninterested in the Beyonce documentary that was broadcast about a year ago. Beyonce’s perfection alienates — or rather “alienated,” until the masterful release of her visual album — voyeurs like me. Since last week, her perfection does not particularly bother me as much, and I was happy to learn, through last year’s documentary I ignored, why Beyonce’s face hurts: “Sometimes it feels like I have to walk with a permanent smile on my face, because if I am just normal and I just look around, then somebody might mistake me for a mean person.”
While it saddens me to think about a person who leads a life consciously trying not to upset others, there is a broader implication of a celebrity that understands such a responsibility: the celebrity manages to maintain a section of his/her self private. This private self is not public property; it is for those people who the celebrity chooses to be intimate with. That takes away the danger of feeling like you have made everything available for sale.
This should not be misconstrued as me (the writer) thinking the actions of one of the two performers is superior or wiser. Rather, it should be perceived as me (the person) knowing that some experiences are not meant to become public property.
If it feels like I let that happen, please know that it was a choice I made carefully, accepting at last that “s/he wasn’t the right one.”
That is why for me, Rih is the best. We both stubbornly persisted, then lost, then accepted to hear what others knew all along.
Are we finally able to sense irony’s ontological weight on an affective level.
THE MANY FACES BEHIND THE ANSWERS
Deciding who the right people to ask these questions was a somewhat random process, but it was not haphazard in terms of demographic representation. The pool included a significant number of individuals of diverse identities: race, color, gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation.
Including artists, lawyers, writers, editors, pop-music-aficionados, graduate students and financial analysts, many of the respondents are my friends, or people I admire and respect. Women working at the IMF and the UN, men from Jamaica — ven a Canadian! Many live in foreign countries, like France or Greece, while others live in the US but are Turkish emigrants. Even a former Def Jam intern, who once found herself in the bathroom with Rihanna Herself, provided her insight.
Further breaking down of their identities sans the consideration of how they themselves identify would be presumptuous and disrespectful on my end. Thus, the only trait I reveal about them is their gender, a paragon that I think should be considered when dissecting a public figure like Rihanna.
I intentionally did not edit the responses to let some of their personality come through, even in their anonymity. (Also, because they are funnier this way, and can be interpreted as elliptical enigmas or riddles.)
RIH’S BEST SONG
The numbers never lie! That is somewhat true, so I tried to compile a list that objectively encapsulates what the people’s favorite song by Rihanna is. The arithmetic reality that came about is derived from the research presented in the appendix, in addition to the responses I received after posting the question on this site.
It is important to publicly acknowledge that I was somewhat lenient with the enthusiasm of some respondents who gave more than one song as an answer. I also was biased in not recognizing the song “Diamonds” was named three or four times, because I hate it and we can all agree we are totally over it forever.

*STUFF NOT HERS: This category was a result of multiple people naming Rih’s collaborations with Jay-Z, Eminem and Drake, or even stating specifically: “I like Rih’s features on other people’s songs.” I also added a misidentified A$AP Rocky song to this list, because she appears in the video for the song and I think that it was a hilarious error to make.
OTHER RIHANNA SONGS: The high number of songs that appear solely as one person’s favorite is fascinating. Rihanna releases a lot of music, but there is so much to choose from there is little crossover in consensus towards her best song — beyond the ultimate winner “We Found Love.”

1. My favorite Rihanna song is probably “Where Have You Been” only because it’s the only song by her that I find almost trance-like. As though when I listen to it, whatever I’m doing or thinking is completely enveloped in the song. While I love other tracks of hers, that’s the only one that elicits such a response.
2. I do think she’s a very talented vocalist, definitely, but what I think Rihanna does exceptionally is conveying an attitude of being above rivalry with other pop and r&b; artists that she’s often compared to/measured up against. She just seems to not give a fuck and wants to make music and enjoy herself, which I admire.
3. Nothing specific comes to mind, other than the fact that I think she tends to release music too quickly in so far as she doesn’t give herself a chance to step away from the industry for a while and really spend time with the music she intends to release. This is the first Fall/Winter in four years that she hasn’t had a new album so I think maybe she’s finally breaking that habit and hopefully her next album is her best yet.
4. I think she’s smart in that she doesn’t let herself get bogged down in the pop/r&b; diva music game (which I mentioned above). Though she did have that Twitter feud with Ciara — but even that was just her maintaining her “doesn’t give a fuck” attitude which I still admire. Whether she’s intelligent in terms of academics, I have no idea. But from what I gather, I think she has a pretty decent business mind.

Lately or the most recent songs I have been into of hers were “We Found Love” and “Diamonds” but I’m not sure they qualify as favs. I loved “Unfaithful” when it first came out when we were much younger. The lyrics are pretty dumb/cheesy but it stuck with me. I’d say honestly that Shut Up and Drive is one of her best songs even though it didn strike popular appeal like some of her other stuff. It’s a little more powerful in a way I like which makes me want to skip to question 3, and yes I’m going to give the stereotypical response: the way she dealt with the Chris Brown situation. She didn’t use it a an opportunity to show how powerful and resilient a strong female could be and that’s frustrating as she holds an extremely influential position in popular culture, especially for young females.
2. I actually think she’s pretty well-rounded. She can dance, her voice is beautiful and strong rather than breath-y like a lot of other female artists of our generation. Her background is something I love and as someone who followers her on Instagram, I think her independence is thriving and she doesn’t have PR people editing her every move so the image she creates belongs more to her than many celebrities can claim. I guess that last bit is what I like best. Oh and of course her performances are some of the best out there, Id love to have seen her enter the stage at MSG riding an army tank…
4. Yes I do. I think if she wasn’t, she’d have just let Publicity and the press do all the work for her but she maintains a voice in her work and her public appearance. To do what she has done, especially at her age and to have kept herself in the spotlight as long as she has is nothing to scoff at, it’s impressive. There’s plenty to criticize but that can be said for any artist, it’s just a matter of what counterbalances those critiques and she’s got plenty.

Her general attitude of fuckslessness makes her feel compelling and dynamic; she’s become a bona fide style icon by taking risks that others wouldn’t and don’t; her music complements that by being, especially as of late, appropriately dark and turbulent, more so than a lot of her pop contemporaries. But that just reinforces the persona; I don’t think the music is front and center.
3. I know that Rihanna has the right to make her own decisions, and she has the prerogative to return to her abuser. That said! I found it reprehensible that she gave an interview to ‘20/20’ where she acknowledged her position as a role model — she called her decision to return to Chris Brown “selfish,” and then said, “Even if Chris never hit me again, who is to say that their boyfriend won’t? Who’s to say that they won’t kill these girls? These are young girls, and I just didn’t realize how much of an impact I had on these girls’ lives until that happened. It was a wake-up call.” — and then returned to him, over and over again, even going so far as to duet with him on an album. 1. This is so hard. There are Rihanna phases in one’s life. I really liked We Found Love, obvs, and Birthday Cake, duh, and the first four songs (+ Stay) on Unapologetic are just great (the rest of the album, not so much). I would have to say the Rihanna song that endures past the party phase, the depressing phase, and the regret phase would have to be You Da One
2. I think Rihanna is a great singer, to be honest, especially in view of other pop singers who may sing well but just constantly blow it (ahem, Ke$ha). She knows exactly how to use her voice: she’s never screaming 100% of every lyric 100% of the time over the 100% loudest beat she could buy (s/o Adele, Alicia Keys, Beyonce). The other thing that I think was brilliant was her SNL performance. That shit was genius. That green screen! But that moment serves the point I’m trying to make: what was extra amazing about the SNL performance was precisely that there was nothing going on on stage except for her singing. We could look and laugh at the dolphins swimming through space and time behind her, but it wasn’t enough to distract from the fact that she was singing her ass off. I mean, this is all assuming that everyone knows what Rihanna does the best is not give two fucks about any of us (see below).
3. Her Instagram feed. I followed her for so long but had to give up. A person just can’t dump 16 photos in a row and think that’s OKAY. (See, also: Brown, Chris [sociopath])
4. I’m hesitant to go on the record and say whether I think Rihanna is smart or not because, well, I don’t know her. I look at her Instagram feed and the aftermath of her getting beaten up by Chris Brown and I suppose I could say “this bish is dumb.” But I think she very carefully guards her emotional state — and that’s all she has and has to do in this world. I remember watching her interview/inquisition with Diane Sawyer post-assault and feeling so uncomfortable, thinking “Rihanna is dead behind the eyes.” But I don’t think getting beaten by Brown, going back to him, having a weird interview makes her smart or dumb, per se. I think it was a window into how difficult it is to curate a public life. What is so smart about Rihanna is her embrace and use of coldness, distance, and disaffection: they make her look like she doesn’t give two fucks about what any of us think, and that’s exactly what she needs to do to afford her some time and space for herself. Genius.

i wouldnt call myself a fan of hers in any capacity, but she doesnt really piss me off at all either. by default chris brown is the thing that upsets me most about rihanna. i know they’re young but i wish she felt empowered enough to move on romantically. she seems like a fun person and he seems like a damaged person who needs help and wont get it so long as people are validating him and making excuses for him (which is really what bothers me about chris brown, not rihanna, i guess).
