Changes At The Awl

It is with mixed feelings that we announce the departure of Awl Publisher John Shankman at the end of this month. John, who has been with the company for nearly three years, and helped us grow from the lean and scrappy startup publications few of us would even recognize now, has been bit by the founding bug and is leaving us to start his own company. According to John, Hashtag Labs "wants to help advertisers produce great #content and help creative talent and publishers maximize their earnings." We look forward to working with John and Hashtag Labs in the future.

"Bet Raise Fold": How To Make A Modern Poker Doc

The documentary Bet Raise Fold tells the story of three online poker players, the companies who make online poker possible, and online poker's Black Friday—the day in 2011 that the government seized the domains and froze the bank accounts of three of the largest online poker operations.

The movie's genesis is wholly of the modern day too. This is an independently produced and distributed documentary, funded by a group of 12 online poker players. No big studios were involved. The Awl is pleased to announce the hiring of John Shankman as publisher of The Awl, The Hairpin and Splitsider.

Shankman will begin next week. He is departing his position as account director at the Huffington Post. Prior, from 2007 to early 2010, he was a regional sales manager at Federated Media.
