Europeans Take Some Pretty Nature Pictures
This is my new desktop picture. It's from Avatar, the final fight scene when Jake Sully battles Colonel Quaritch in his lethal mecha suit! Actually, it's not. It's from this slideshow of finalists from the German Society of Wildlife Photographers' European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. Which is better, really, because James Cameron probably won't show up speaking Na'vi at the awards ceremony. Check them out. Lots of beautifulness.
World to End with Multiple "Avatar" Sequels in 2014, 2015
I guess we're all betting against the end of the world happening in 2012. In Avatar 2, that LED tree gets some kind of venereal disease and Jake Sully has to go into space to get some antibiotics. Or something like that.
Gayvatar Dance Fever
The current, short-lived mini-vogue at gay circuit parties and megaclubs? Gayvatar sexploitation. It even makes sense conceptually, according to a club publicist: "The drama of the movie parallels the drama in the nightlife world. Everyone's calling the police on each other, liquor license inspectors, booking celebrities against each other." Yes, just like on Pandora!
The Oscars are Next Week and Nope, I Still Haven’t Seen 'Avatar'
No, I'm not some joyless prude. I was once like you, even. Remember when we were sitting around your apartment and decided to watch the trailer online? How we laughed! Someone had tried to adapt early 90s Trapper Keepers® for the screen! And they'd spent a small nation's GDP to make it happen! If, some months from that point, James Cameron Trips Over A Fanboy Wishlist Into The Uncanny Valley wasn't going to be the flop of our young century, jeez, it really should've been. READ MORE
Scientists Love "Avatar," Too
"And here we have yet another reason for scientists to love this movie. Who has not tired of seeing scientists portrayed as either grant-greedy maniacs or naïve dangers to humanity, shouting 'I'm sure the creatures are friendly!' just before being devoured? In films, scientists are often assumed to be inhuman to some degree, and if they become more human as a film proceeds, it is by becoming less of a scientist." READ MORE
Trolls and the Suicidal Come Together, Face the Dark Side of Publicity, at 'Avatar' Website
"When I woke up this morning after watching Avatar for the first time yesterday, the world seemed... gray. It was like my whole life, everything I've done and worked for, lost its meaning. It just seems so... meaningless. I still don't really see any reason to keep... doing things at all. I live in a dying world." This from Ivar Hill, a 17-year-old Swedish game designer, on the Avatar forum page. Apparently, many Avatar fans have been feeling suicidal? But help is on the way. "And even if the CNN article does lure trolls here, it sure makes people who also are suffering from the pandora syndrome come here," wrote one forum poster today. Also: "The dark site of publicity... It will go down after a while." Yes, that's what she said.
Oscar Season: Those Whiny Snobs/Tin-Eared Populists Will/Will Not Salute 'Avatar'
• The D Beast: "Another lock for an Oscar nomination.... the Academy has always had a tin ear when it comes to what a good script is. It's Crash and Star Wars rolled into one. How could it not be nominated?" READ MORE
I Hated 'Avatar' With The Fire Of A Thousand Suns, by Maria Bustillos
From time to time, The Awl offers its space to normal, everyday people with a perspective on national issues. Today, we're pleased to bring you this report by Maria Bustillos, who went to the movies this weekend. READ MORE
Ross Douthat Would Make A Fine Atheist
Ross Douthat goes after what he calls "Hollywood's religion of choice" in the Times today: "Avatar is [James] Cameron's long apologia for pantheism-a faith that equates God with Nature, and calls humanity into religious communion with the natural world." Describing pantheism as "a form of religion that even atheists can support," he argues that it doesn't offer humans the "escape upward" into immortality that he believes is the reason religion exists. Flicked Off, with Mary HK Choi: 'Avatar'
This movie makes me emo. Thinking about it makes my nose do that chloriney thing you get right before you start crying. I am SO GAY for this movie that I can't stand it. And you know what? Having finally seen it, I don't even care what the haters have to say. I am a happy meniscus that your spite sauce slides off of. I'm lifted. READ MORE
