Same experience for me one night back in '00. Was walking to the 6 from Cornell Medical Center when the streetlights started flickering for about five-ten seconds.
Then a loud hissssss, and BOOM. Manhole cover shoots fifteen feet straight up in the sky and the block goes pitch black.
