On 'Gone With The Wind': Devil In A Black Bombazine Dress

I know the "what am I missing about the South" question was tongue-in-cheek, but as a carpetbagger who moved to Louisiana for 5 years, I gotta say: EVERYTHING.

If I could start my own frivolous charity, it would send teenage Yankees down south just so they can see how people live with a more full integration of local history. Even people who couldn't tell you shit about national politics or international geography often get the state or county (or Parrish) past on a level I haven't found in the North. And that makes you confront the ugly part of that history a lot earlier in your life and a lot more thoroughly. Not everyone comes out of it with greater racial or class sensitivity, but I was lucky to know a majority of people who understand and try to fight continued institutional racism, and a lot of them hated the wider view of the South as a backward-ass, benighted place.

The real benefit for me living there was looking back at my Northern Midwestern culture and having the veil pulled back on the racism and violence in our history there that had been projected on to the Terrible South, Source of All Racial Problems Which We Have Always Opposed, Yes, They're the Bad Guys We Promise. It really made my Grandma's insistence that Gone With the Wind was a work of non-fiction make more sense.

On Why Harry Reid's Nevada Field Operation Is Losing

Really? The Democratic database keeps all sorts of information about individuals, like what kind of yard sign they had 2 years ago, what they said about each particular issue, who last talked to them and when and how, that we absolutely wouldn't want to share with our opponents. They both are initially based off of the same voter registration information, but there's years worth of party-specific data that has accrued, as well.

I'd also like to clarify that the Dem. database software does have a phone call functionality like Natasha describes for Angle's campaign, however (in my experience) we just don't often trust it to volunteers, no matter how savvy, and you have to dial the numbers yourself. Today I've been using an autodial system for Dems (not in NV) which works like cjmmtl describes. Maybe we have worse autodial vendors than Republicans, but our voter database and theirs is very similar, and the callsheets pictured above are standard across the country and have been for years.
