On The Great GoogaMooga Aftermath of Subway Hippie Horror

I will never understand or be able to tolerate my generation's* need to make a spectacle of itself and be the centre of attention at all times. I'm also pretty sure that last sentence would be true of you stopped it just before the apostrophe.

*Whatever that means.

On I Have Thoughts About Commenting Systems!

But it would still be preferable to a) a Facebook-based system or b) a system that lets people use their FB or Twitter logins to make drive-by point-missing comments. The requirement that people invest a little time to create an account is a feature, not a bug.

On I Have Thoughts About Commenting Systems!

So maybe it's just because Canada is pretty much a third-world country when it comes to the internet, but there's always a really perceptible hesitation when the Disqus-powered part of a site loads. And I don't know if Disqus is any more or less reliable than the current system (or anything else you might roll out) but commenting seems like too integral a part of The Awl to outsource to a system that already seems to sputter a bit. I mean, maybe two years from now we'll all be talking about the Great 72-Hour Disqus Failure of '13 or whatever.

On A Poem By Sherman Alexie

Just devastatingly good. (And the perfect sublime counterpoint to Fruhlinger's wonderfully ridiculous post about dead emperors this morning.)

On Iced Tea-Flavored Beer

I usually like darker, bitterer beers, so I was really skeptical when a bartender suggested I try Mill Street Lemon Tea beer but it's a really, really good summer beer. It's a wheat bear with the typical citrus-y notes, but instead of coriander or whatever, they flavour it with a little tea. It's not overpowering at all, or remotely sweet, but it's really refreshing.

But this Coors stuff sounds pretty gross.
