At least he's not being serial-raped by the Internet all the time like poor Katie Roipe.

My interpretation of the Mystery Man is the externalized shadow of Fred's subconscious mind (see: Jung) that others may or may not see there. The shadow represents repressed anxiety, fear, and anger, all elements consuming Fred/Pete. There are other psychological symbols involved, sometimes seen as external but often representing the internal. Interesting that you use the Mystery Man and Fred/Pete as a jumping off point for analysis of evolving social/anti-social personal self-contained technological systems.
