On America's Adopted Koreans, Part 2: When Adoption Became Visible
i was born into and spent my formative years a part of the LA County Foster Care System. it feels like a literary cliché, but i actually was born a poor orphan (which is just about as fun as it sounds). i will preface this with saying that although this isn't something i necessarily hide from people, it's also something i generally avoid reflecting on... BUT when i do, it makes me grateful for my present circumstances and i think it's important we all do that at times.
i'm not going to say that i hold anything against anyone for adopting foreign babies because lots of kids need homes and frankly, in a lot of states.. including my own (California) there are challenges for gay and lesbian parents in acquiring a child through traditional channels. however, there are many, many kids here who need homes and maybe instead of going on a whim to some african nation to pick them up or spending in the six figures to have a fertilized embryo implanted in someone you might consider looking in to all the orphaned children who literally live in your own neighborhoods.
