This reminds me of the Frank Rich reviewing years. The butcher of broadway was so bitter back then. Now he's found his niche. But for too long, he would respond to rapturous audiences with a scathing review. As one fellow professional said to me, "it makes you wonder if they get it right where the fire was" in the NY Times. I was at opening night of Accidental Death of an Anarchist with Jonathan Pryce and Patti La Pone, the audience was howling, and Rich reported that the lame jokes fell with a thud in a silent house. Just lied. Rich would also, once a playwright had overcome his murder attempt and gone on to fame, pretend that he had always seen the writer's promise. David Henry Hwang used to go around sputtering, "I can SHOW you his pan of FOB!!" when Rich claimed that Hwangs latest effort wasn't as good as his wonderful FOB. The stories go on. Someone should do a report.
