On How To Make Weeknight Pasta Sauce

No need to run the tomatoes through the blender/food processor. Just break them up with a spatula as they cook.

Also, mix up some tomato paste (the tubed kind is great because it lasts a long time) with about a half-cup of red wine. Add it towards the end of the cooking - thickens it up and adds lots of flavor.

On Germans Like Fake Meat

One of my favorite little passages from Marx's Capital:

"Englishmen, always well up in the Bible, knew well enough that man, unless by elective grace a capitalist, or landlord, or sinecurist, is commanded to eat his bread in the sweat of his brow, but they did not know that he had to eat daily in his bread a certain quantity of human perspiration mixed with the discharge of abscesses, cobwebs, dead black-beetles, and putrid German yeast, without counting alum, sand, and other agreeable mineral ingredients."

Yum!

On Who Won The Productivity Revolution? You Can Probably Guess.

@propertius Well that observation came out of my long relationship with Karl Marx (though as a FB friend puts it, Karl & I are in an open relationship). So I'm not sure what you mean by reading stuff like this despite the renaissance of interest in Marx. There may be an interest in some intellectual sense, but there's hardly a mass demand to expropriate the expropriators, is there?

On Jon Stewart, Stop Hurting America!

I suppose this sort of piece is supposed to be "unpredictable" and "refreshing" but it seems like a very familiar brand of pseudo-contrarianism to me. Rick Perry is a cretin and people who think execution is an applause line are ghouls. I could list a lot of reason why I hate Democrats, too, but that's another story.

On "Give Us Money or We'll Shoot This Dow"

Actually, the big Wall Street houses have never been big austerity promoters. They mostly supported the fiscal stimulus package in 2009, and continue to say that the economy needs some sort of stimulus. The Wall Street support for austerity has come mainly from its own petty bourgeoisie (i.e., the Tea Partisans on a grander scale) - hedge fund and private equity guys, who have a social philosophy straight out of Ayn Rand.

On The Secret to Not Wearing Socks with Shoes

"You will never, ever, ever feel less like a man than when you put these on." Choire, you say that as if there's something wrong with that feeling.
