On Why Does Vinyl Sound The Best? A Chat With A Musician Who Knows

Thanks for writing this - I'm always interested to hear what people with more age and experience think about newer recording techniques and formats. I do have to take issue though with this statement:

"Our ears have had 70 years of conditioning to the limited frequency range of vinyl discs."

I don't think I buy the argument that sonic preferences are hereditary, so except for folks aged 80+, nobody has had 70 years of sonic conditioning for anything. I get that this sounds better than "when I was 17, music was published in formats with limited frequency range, so that's what I like," but I don't think that the pseudoscientific gussying-up is necessary.

And in terms of personal listening practices, at the point at which you're transferring a vinyl record to mp3 and then listening to it on a phone, are you really having a substantially different experience than you would if you just ripped the 16-bit CD version?

On What Is The Real-Real Thing?

I'm not sure what we've got qualifies as a Bubble by web 1.0 standards- yes, angel and VC money is probably easier to come by than it should be, and yes, it's probably hard to justify a 25x multiple on Facebook, and yes Groupon doesn't make a lot of sense, but there's way more actual money belonging to regular human being-type consumers on the table than there was in the 90s, no? Which was more or less the missing ingredient before, if I'm not incorrect?

On Ana Lola Roman, "Decode"

According to this thing, she is working with Tom Ellard who is in that band. Not sure what she herself has brought to the table here but I'd say it's too early to call whether this is a Grimes situation or a Lana Del Ray situation.

On Pinterest: Delightful, Addictive, Theft

@SeanP You have a really anarchic vision of how copyright should work on the internet. Is it actually your contention that everyone should have a right to make money off of any IP on the internet, no matter whose IP it is, because web browsers display IP content?

On The Day the Gold Disappeared

"Carl Hegelman," are you Nihon Cassandra of Cassandra Does Tokyo? (for others: http://nihoncassandra.blogspot.com/)

I am not saying that you are him/her, but it sure would make sense!

On Kanye West And Co., "Christmas In Harlem"

I'm sorry, but I can't co-sign this one. I think it sounds half-finished and relatively amateurish.

In fairness, my expectations w/r/t the quality of Kanye's output have been raised to unfair levels. If this had been Cam's track, I'd be fine with it.

On Lil Wayne Featuring Corey Gunz, "6'7'"

"TALKIN TO MYSELF BECAUSE I AM MY OWN CONSULTANT"

This song is awesome. I am wondering why people are not more excited about it considering the pre-jail drop in quality of his output. In that context, this is stunning.

On How America Ends

Yeah I'm not sure I understand his thesis - China, rich and powerful from selling us televisions, decides to screw us over so badly we have no more money with which to buy televisions. At which point, THEY WIN?

On Receptionists: Just Another Budgetary Item To Cut

I'm with DoctorDisaster on the graphic design thing. Unless you work for like an ad agency or something, the people on your staff are not very good.

Also, on the topic of consultants vs employees, consultants are very useful when the question at hand is "how many employees should we fire and also which ones."

Traditionally, employees are not very good at answering that question. But maybe things are different where you work!
