Bullet plus italics is not how you mark up a block quotation. BLOCKQUOTE is. It’s nice to know the Awl remains a safe space for Internet publishers unable to mark up so much as a paragraph.
I think it’s great how you wrote a listicle with a number in its title and couldn’t be bothered to mark up the items as an ordered list.
The Awl: Where HTML goes to die.
“Gay offset credits”: A+ concept, terrible nomenclature. But “sci-fi” has already solved that problem, as expressed in this proverb:
How many quatloos do I get for watching Bender’s Game instead?
As you well know, that isn’t how you capitalize French (or in this case “French”).
Surely you recall the same property was attributed to Sorbothane.
I am all in favour of calling out bad writing and copy quality on essentially any site or platform run by adults, and of course especially so in the education context.
But it is pointless to do so on a site that refuses to repair its own type, copy, and character-encoding defects, even when identified, and just as pointless to do so in a jeremiad that complains about apostrophes without being able to typeset one. (And, yes, “out” is not “our.”)
Physician, copy-edit thyself.
Also, the slug of this posting, like all slugs of all postings at the Awl Network™, is a joke.
Why is a posting about affordable housing overrun with spam comments about getting rich quick?
Welcome to the Broken Awl Theory.
After you fix your copy errors, you can delete the now-commonplace spam comments.
@pissy elliott I see your nomination and raise you Hard Core Logo at the Fox Beaches.
It’s cute how they go to all that trouble but can’t be bothered to upgrade to OpenType (no ff ligature).
