Nice story about a great man. He did, however, often make his subjects very nervous.

On It's Time To Set Your Fish Sauce Free

@goodiesfirst OMG, shrimp paste is to fish sauce as Limburger is to Monterey Jack. I bought a block of it for a recipe, and after cutting into it I couldn't even stand to keep it in the cupboard.

On It's Time To Set Your Fish Sauce Free

@Vicky I generally have some Squid Brand in my fridge as well -- no mishaps yet! -- and I always smile at the exuberantly non-Western brand concept. (No stately pagoda or scenic tropical island here!)

On An Analysis of the Thomas Kinkade Calendar for April

@theheckle The cows are wearing shock collars. The stone wall keeps the guinea pigs in. (Hard to see these details without a higher-res upload.)

On An Analysis of the Thomas Kinkade Calendar for April

Ugh, I just can't with this guy...
... OK, I can for at least one point: it KEELS me how in not one of his paintings does the so-called "Painter of Light" depict a single definable light source that, you know, creates areas of light and shade in a coherent manner. #UPYOURSMASACCIO

On Buildings Ugly

The Aldar HQ in Abu Dhabi has a very Bond-supervillain look to me.

On Both Sides Should Apologize For Their Bad Germans

I'm also interested in the idea (one of Gregg Easterbrook's recurrent themes in TMQ) that we use fatuously over-specific numbers to give an air of scientific credibility to what are actually rough estimates. In the context of sports, the pretense is that we can instantaneously perceive minute fractions of time and distance, as in "Add four tenths of a second [not three, not five] to the shot clock."
So, 1,500 dead = guess. 1,394 dead = SCIENCE!

On Both Sides Should Apologize For Their Bad Germans

I don't know -- we're not very good at coming up with precise numbers for this sort of thing even today (see the Rwandan genocide link above). I don't doubt, as libmas suggests, that some 16th-century monk diligently added up lists of names and arrived at 1,394. But it seems a stretch to assume that the reports generating the lists were at all accurate or comprehensive. (No al-Jazeera back then pointing cameras everyhere.)
