On Hollywood To Ruin My Favorite Book

The issue isn't whether the guy will make a great movie—I'm prepared to believe he can do a wonderful, totally watchable film.

But a film misses the point of the book, which is the sheer joy of reading it, the descriptions, the humor, the way it captures something fundamental about New York. It's the words that are the key, not the story, and no film can ever capture that.

On "There is no making football safer."

Actually, that's not true. There's an argument to be made that the helmets, pads, etc., make the sport more dangerous, because people do things because they are protected (or think they are protected) that they wouldn't do if they didn't have that equipment. Nobody is going to use their head as a weapon if it isn't protected by a helmet.

Also: I disagree with the notion that, simply because we haven't heard of any marquee buyers, none exist. But I do think Sigerson's speculation has a lot more grounding than Kurtz's column.

My favorite part of this is that to illustrate his post touting the virtues of Free, Chris Anderson steals an illustration (that the New Yorker paid for) from Gladwell's review...
