On When the 'Times' and the 'Journal' Destroy Each Other, We'll Still Be Here, Just Chillin'!

I recently read Mark Helprin's novel The Winter Tale which features two warring New York newspapers with larger-than-life owners who snipe at each other and plot destruction. At the time I thought, this is a ridiculous plot line! I guess the giant magical blizzard engulfing Manhattan is next.

On Janet Malcolm's Abandoned Autobiography

I was just rereading The Journalist and the Murderer this weekend so this post makes me ROFL.

On Flicked Off: Two Things Not To Get Wrong About "Inglourious Basterds"

Not to be more film geeky than necessary but there's also reference to Hitchcock--I'm pretty sure that split screen that shows the black and white clip of some getting on the bus with the flammable nitrate canister is from Sabotage.

On "Nine" And The Persistence Of Memory

My parents took me to tons of musicals as a kid too and one of my fondest memories is of seeing Raul Julia in Man of La Mancha. That man could SING.

On OMG Dan Baum Doing Storytime On Twitter

I don't know if I find it discouraging or encouraging that it never gets easier even if you're a Staff Writer at the freakin' New Yorker.

On Flicked Off: "Tyson"

Someone perhaps slightly less trustworthy than ol' Tony Scott would be James Toback. That guy talks and talks and talks and yet is totally full of crap (and obsessed with the fascinating narrative of his own life). You should check out his recent interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air where she gently tries to get him to have some critical distance from his subject and he refuses.
