On "I Hate J. Hoberman"

I loved reading Hoberman, despite several "disagrees" -- and his coverage of Cannes was always fun. I think younger critics like myself need seasoned precursors to learn from every week. (Spare me the baby boomer slash and burn talk unless you're 17: you should grow out of it after about a year of actual experience and some semblance of philosophy -- but happy hit-getting, Eileen!) Still, Hoberman knew who he was lying down with when New Times took over, so I can't really pity him too much.

On Drunk Man Disliked Women

Besides the absolutely horrifying possibility of being trapped for days in the middle of the ocean with the magazine's staff -- and whatever "special musical guests" it might deem hip and now -- this is another reason I am delighted I have a severe allergic reaction to the phrase "Nation cruise."

On Two Poems By Robert Hershon

These are both awesome -- and the thought of Taylor Mead and broccoli together made me shiver.

On Brett Ratner Under The Impression That He's A Storyteller

"Ratner’s gaffe could be damaging since he is the producer of this year’s Oscar telecast."

Oh. Well then.

On Eighth-Graders Get Really Mean 9/11 Art Review

I did not know that "then, as now—Jews are the preferred target of bias crimes." Did I miss a vote?

On Three Poems by Paul Legault

These are awesome, and funny in a glow-in-the-dark way. Will definitely have to check out more of his stuff!

On Photos and Video from Election Day in Cairo

Even though there are still some serious concerns about the Egyptian army, the rush of words from the voters mouths is a wonderful symptom of democracy's onrushing hubbub. Thanks so much for this. But how different I feel looking at these photos than similar ones from Iraq six years ago ... this really is the right way to do it, yes?

On Rebel Libyans Stalling While the World Debates

you're not being a dick -- and I don't mean to sound like a neo con. Yes, it's complicated, and yes I know that aggression against one dictator would make every other dictator all nervy and righteous. (Although Bahrain and Yemen seem to be just leapin' right into the vacuum of reprisals.) I wonder if just some more publicity backbone about the fact that it's not "the West" would get the message across ... but maybe not. You, madam or sir, have a cooler head than I in this frustrating situation.

On Rebel Libyans Stalling While the World Debates

At least responding to the rebel (and Arab league etc) please for a no-fly zone would be great. Right now China and Russia are holding everyone back -- yet the rebels are blaming "the West" for betraying them. That doesn't seem good for us no matter who prevails for now. Also, hang in there rebels!

On Ten Songs For Young, Active Cats To Force Their Extroverted Woman Owners To Sing For Them (On A Rainy Stay-At-Home Friday)

I have no idea why, but for me the "Robot Marathon in Osaka Japan" video is showing before the jump right now on this post, and the thought of a woman singing the background music in it is exactly why I adore this site.
