On "Yes, I'm Familiar with Your Scene": The New Destroyer Video

@Gef the Talking Mongoose I completely agree with you that the original is, indeed, still heart-stoppingly thrilling. I really like Destroyer but this video kinda pissed me off - if such strong source material is going to be so conspicuously referenced, then really go for it, right?

Ok, I've officially invested too much time thinking about this. Everybody, get back to work!

On On Needing Your Mother, Still

This was a great piece. My own mom died three years ago; her birthday was this past Sunday. I still feel a moment of sadness whenever I have the urge to call my mom to ask her advice and I've resigned myself to the notion that this urge will never pass. I'm grateful when it happens now because it tells me that my mom still has a presence in my life.

I'm also grateful for all the surrogate moms in my neighbourhood here in downtown Toronto - Valerie who lives up the street and is a totally charming but curmudgeonly (and an excellent cook); Judy from next door who, just this morning, started giving me a tutorial on making bread (she's back home for the next 90 minutes as the dough does its first rise). These awesome ladies can't replace my mom, of course, but getting to know them has taught me a valuable lesson about respecting my elders and taking of any opportunity to learn from them when they want to share their knowledge. Corny but true.
