On The Ten Kinds Of Hot Guys You Ladies Could Meet in Airports If You Really Wanted To
MAAAAAAATTT ! <3 <3
There was a very cute guy with crutches on my last flight. But he was traveling with his parents and I didn't make a move.(I like to think I'm the kind of girl who would've introduced herself, had he been alone, but I am so not.)

On 'Confessions of a Shopaholic': If Patricia Highsmith Wrote Chick Lit
I teach high school journalism and creative writing. I always ask new students if they like to read and their favorite book. This year they were all like YEAH, BOOKS, READING. And then I found out this is their favorite book ever... I haven't read it but I loved this piece.
Also, at least in the movie version, all of her outfits are either blahhh or plain ugly. Or, clown-fetish prostitute, like riornrrd said.

On 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows': Two Nerds Geek Out
I agree with all your very valid points, but still really liked the movie. I've always tried to watch them all like movies, not movies based on books that I love. Harry Potter is exactly about confronting fears etc, but also about so many other important, powerful things, and all of the movies fail to represent those. To fans like us, this seems like a betrayal of a really complex series. But I guess that's the difference between books and movies. Movies (at least big budget ones) are about one mood or feeling, while books can give us many.
(hope I explained this well-English is my second lenguage)

On How I Fought Bedbugs And Won
i've never had bedbugs, but two years ago I had lice and I felt the exact same way.
My little sister was 9 and there was an epidemic at her school. I felt humilliated, like somehow this could NOT happen to an adult.
My hair was super long, thick and just..A LOT,so my mother had to cut it. I'm quite dramatic, but I honestly thought that the nigthmare would last forever. It took more than a month to be totally lice-free and I'm still paranoic every time I brush my hair.

On On Seeing A Man With A Large Axe Walk Down The Street
When I was in high school there was a traditional Independence Day Party at this guy's house. He was older, a friend of my friends. Every year he'd get totally drunk on tequila (we're mexicans, that's what we drink september 15th), then produce a pickax from somewhere inside his house and start axing (is that a word? English as second lenguage, you guys!) the street. Pictures were taken, uptight girls were scared (ahem,me..) and then someone would convince him to stop it so that the party could continue.
This happened for at least 3 years. To this day, I have no idea why he did it, and have never seen that level of drunkness again.
So I guess my point is, living in Mérida, México is cool too. Sometimes.

On Ciudad Juarez: Why the Press Declared a Cartel Win
I love The Awl, but this is the first time i comment. As a mexican, this obviously very close to my heart.
But it is also strangely foregin. See, I live in Yucatán, the safest state in the country,in the south. The families of the big drug bosses live here, so we like to think that nothing bad ever happens (there's even a saying "when the end of the world comes, go to Yucatán")
Anyway, it's refreshing to get this kind of reporting. We have some fine journalists in México, but I really can't blame them for fearing for their lives and their loved ones'.
As a Communications major, it's my goal to be a part of the solution through cultural and educational change.

On Habanero Salsa: Chase The Dragon
WOW, this is so awesome! I am THE WORST Mexican/Yucatecan because I don't really like spicy food. But I used to be the Community Manager for El Yucateco. And it is really amazing how many people are just crazy about this brand. Anyway, I love The Awl and it is so cool to see the name of my homestate here :)
