I like "secret hidden comment threads" like this. You should do more of these! Put one in every newsletter. People can come to the secret thread each week and chat, or tell jokes, or discuss issues of importance.
Or make "acii pictures." That's always fun!

Suggestion: Nobody should be allowed to delete their own comments without posting some kind of explanation.
"Deleted by user" ... Why??? Explain, in 140 characters or fewer.

Like the current system, like the commenter numbers, will be sad to see both go. (Only thing wrong with current system is shaded/non-shaded thread order gets messed up in "popular" sort view. Fix that, then perfect.)
Don't know why dropping personal pronouns and articles here. Too lazy to type many words guess. Tired today. Type like Hulk when tired.

@cuminafterall But the alternating-color thing doesn't work if you change the sort order to "Most popular"! :-( Then you get alot of "gray, gray, white, white" etc. and it actually makes sorting out threads more difficult.
So ... um. In the new system, don't do that.
