On Why Does Pret A Manger Think Americans Are Stupid?

@Brooklyn Battery Unfortunately, no. Check out the inspection report on the DOH site - improper food storage temps, roaches, etc.

On Why Does Pret A Manger Think Americans Are Stupid?

@Brooklyn Battery Yes. It probably will have a re-inspection and reopen soon, but I'd still steer clear from now on.

On The Terrible, Fascinating World Of Hate-Blogs

I found myself in a cycle of reading a hate-blog (Get Off My Internets, which mostly hates mommy bloggers and healthy living bloggers) but it ended up making me like a lot of the blogs that the site hated. So then I was hate-reading the hate-site and it was making me crazy, so I stopped the entire thing and now my life is much better for it.

From my experience with personal blogs and their associated hate-sites, it seemed like super-restrictive comment policing often inflamed the haters. Blogs that ruthlessly deleted any hint of negativity (however well-intentioned) drove people to hate sites where people were really obsessed with the "what is she hiding?" mentality.

On To Nowhere Island! In The Middle Of The Sea

@Peter Bailey@twitter He wrote about St. Helena again in "Atlantic," which I highly recommend for geeks of all type.

On 'The Secret History': I Know What You Did Last Reading Period

- Still love all things classics. Classics 4eva.

- I liked The Little Friend. It took me about 6 months to come to terms with the ending though.

- I spent summers in my childhood in Bennington and college at a small liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere. Both are as claustrophobic as Tartt makes Hampden feel.

- The rich people. Gah. The description of the house and family at Bunny's funeral (not a spoiler) makes me feel so lower class I can't stand it.

On To Nowhere Island! In The Middle Of The Sea

I get you. One of my dreams is to go to the similarly-remote island of St. Helena. You can only get there on an RMS mail ship from Cape Town and the cost of the whole enterprise is daunting.

But in my mind, that remote island in the middle of the ocean will be the most relaxing, calmest place I could ever visit. (Just thinking of visiting brings down my blood pressure, honestly.)
