On Understudies! How 'Spring Awakening' Changed the Business of Musical Theater

i would also note how spring awakening came after hedwig and the angry inch which embodied most if not all of the attributes you point out here. the songs were decidedly rock and roll, non-narrative and the overall effect of the musical took you out of typical musical structure.

On Understudies! A Carnival Named Desire: 'Carousel'

i saw this production at lincoln center with audra mcdonald and the cross-racial casting was a noted but small distinction. the staging was exquisite however as the cast built a stylized carousel on stage during the opening number.

On Understudies! To Love and Lose Genius: 'Sunday in the Park With George'

i saw the production on broadway with peters and patinkin and it was brilliant and moving if lacking in "feel good" songs you left humming. it did, however, ignite my love for peters who i went on to see in many many things.
