As someone who was a teen in the '80s, those fedoras, neon leather skirts and suspenders on girls didn't read as tomboy at the time (at least not to me who coveted that look). That was popular/cool-girl gear, and therefore nothing but feminine.

I took it as a bad sign that Vulture wasn't recapping the second season. Enlightened is unusual and so compelling because it's rare on TV to see a non-young woman who doesn't have her shit together that's not in the Showtime (Nurse Jackie, Weeds, United States of Tara, maybe not The Big C) vein or who falls into the "married to her job" camp. And for some reason, people don't like seeing that on TV (which makes me more sad).

The only problem I have with this premise is limiting it to McDonald's. Times Square should also be home to KFC's green chicken curry, Dairy Queen mango sticky rice sundaes, Taco Bell potato and paneer burritos, Starbucks lamingtons, Pizza Hut's multiple cheese-stuffed Asia and Middle East exclusives, and obviously, a pork-and-alcohol-free Cheesecake Factory.

And if you were in grade school (everywhere I'm assuming and not just loser early '80s Portland) you could mail order paperback YA adaptations of many of those shows through Scholastic or some such. I was bummed to just discover that "Paper Dolls," the novel is no longer with me, but somehow the "It's Your Move" in print managed to survive the ages.
