On Alan Greenspan's Window Is Always Open
Actually, there was also huge technical failure on Greenspan's part. It was that the Fed continued to use Owner equivalent rent as the biggest component in it's measure of inflation(CPI). Rent didn't budge for a long time, despite housing prices going up, which in turn hid the massive inflation of 2002-06. Instead they should have used the Case-Schiller indexed CPI, which tracks mean house values. This would have prompted the Fed to raise rates much sooner than it did. See http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2008/12/case-shiller-cpi-vs-cpi-u-november-2008.html for an excellent analysis of this.
