I have never heard such negativity. Give the cat at least a small reward for doing its' duty. All animals protect their territories, and the cat doesn't know how big the bear really is, just as the bear is confused by the cat, probably thinking "what on earth is this and how dangerous is it?". They are both doing what comes naturally. Remember, snakes can be small, also, but you frequently don't survive the first meeting.
