On Free To Be... Straight White Males

@saythatscool I was "thinking" about the watching-video-games part, but the point is taken.

On Random Rich People Not Great at Job

I mean... three is pretty small for a risk committee, but the CEO and the lead director at a major defense contractor seem pretty defensible choices from here. Futter's a question mark, but if the committee were five or six deep she'd probably be considered good balance. She makes perfect sense on the Public Responsibility Committee, for example.

JPM has twelve directors, five committees. Only four of those directors have joined the board in the last ten years -- a lot of institutional inertia, maybe. Both Risk and Audit would probably have been looking at the kinds of transactions that led to the big news stories of the last month there. (As one of the people quoted in that piece suggests, where were the auditors?)

On The Past Actually Is Past

@Jeremy Mesiano-Crookston Hear you, bro. But: all that other stuff is the internet. This is... trying just hard enough to be easier to take.

On The Past Actually Is Past

This shift is corroborated by Lionel Shriver, author of the recently-adapted “We Need to Talk About Kevin."

Oh well in that case.

Just a thought -- all these 'death of the music industry' 'death of publishing' 'death of newspapers' 'decline of literature' stories... Isn't it possible that what we're seeing is self-preserving systems following their risk managers instead of just trying whatever.

On Gerhard Richter Is A Famous Painter Of Expensive Paintings

Daydream Nation? Grey Gallery show? Sigmar Polke? Anselm Kiefer? Just throwing some names out there as possible proximal causes for the the Richter bandwagon's momentum.
