Landing on Mars and engineering fast cars look backwards. Not only did the Mars Rover land over a decade ago, the Mars Rover can't help but to recall the moon landing. The ability to explore space is an example of a previous generation's scientific achievement. Same goes for "engineering fast cars": that's been happening for a long time now.
So two of the examples of what makes "today" pretty great only serve to make yesterday seem better, which makes "today" seem even sadder.
