On How Silence Works: Emailed Conversations With Four Trappist Monks

One of my dearest friends is a Cistercian priest (an order similar to this one) and almost all of my correspondence with him is through letters. He is very much in touch with the world but has such a simple perspective on life which is very helpful and refreshing. Thanks for writing this, it was fascinating. And for the record, the unordained monks are called "Brother" also "novices." Once they are ordained as priests they are all "father." Usually they spend a few years as novices before taking a vow of permanent commitment to the order and then spend another year preparing for priesthood.
