My great-grandfather drew the cover of that book (the image of the man with the little girl on his shoulders)! It's from a children's book he wrote called Our Indians by Luther Bradley, published in 1899. We had it around our house when I was a kid and the first time I saw the cover of Swamplandia! in a bookstore, I stood there and stared at it, feeling kind of offended for a minute. But I bought the book and really liked it. My 101 year old grandmother has the cover framed on her bedside table--she's so proud!
