I confess to not having read any of the Didion canon (and I'm not a complete Paulette, though I consider Kael's writing to be a force of nature and similarly regard Meryl Streep as an acting android), but the screenplay for Up Close and Personal, which was a product of the Didion/Dunne factory, is such a complete piece of self-satisfied, execrable drivel that I'm not inclined to be any fairer to Didion than Kael was.
