On What It Cost Eight Women Writers To Make It In New York

@mbmargarita I hear you. This makes me want to spend my meager saving lest it depreciate to the point of nothing before I can enjoy it. Let's face it, it's never going to be enough to retire on and after inflation it could just be the cost of one years worth of wet catfood in forty years.

On 'The Autobiography Of Henry VIII': Which Ill-Fated Wife Would You Be?

@Bittersweet Through a glass darkly is one of my all time favorites. Have you read To Dance with Kings by Rosiland Laker?

On 'The Autobiography Of Henry VIII': Which Ill-Fated Wife Would You Be?

@jolie Mantel is such a beautifully complex writer though. There is seriously nothing else of that quality in the genre.

Through a Glass Darkly by Karleen Koen. 18th century England AND France. Orgies and broken promises. So much fun.

On 'The Autobiography Of Henry VIII': Which Ill-Fated Wife Would You Be?

AHAAAA Read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. It is so fucking good! Well- researched and beautifully written from the perspective of Thomas Cromwell (she totally mocks Thomas More!). You will love it. I, too, am a devotee of historical fiction. Diana Gabaldon all the time. Seriously, all the time. I've read each of those 6oo page novels 10 or 12 times.

On What Books Make You Cringe To Remember?

@nardcore It may be a fine read, I guess. But the prose is bloated and stilted and the characters are tropes rather than people. All told Rice is a far better writer than Rand and she wasn't a dingbat with an absurd "philosophical" axe to grind. But let's not pretend like Rice is an author of note.

On Is James Deen the Title IX of Porn?

Yeah, I call bullshit on this. Has the lady never watched kink.com? James Deen is a sexy little beast and so far from vanilla. Frankly, he's much more like the mint chocolate chip of the porn world.

On Some Advice for Young People

@bshep: Couldn't agree more. I spent seven years slogging through a Ph.d program with the most melodramatic, fickle department you could imagine with lousy placement rates to boot. It was soul crushing. I finished two chapters of my dissertation and just set it aside and walked away. I'm currently waiting tables, adjuncting, and preparing to open a used bookstore but at least I never have to see any of those people ever again.
