On America's Unchecked Gun Culture Killed Trayvon Martin
It occurred to me yesterday to think about the number of people killed by gun violence and how that compares to the number of people killed by cell-phone using drivers. Sure it's hard to calculate precise figures, but it's probably roughly an order of magnitude. And sure it's often more painful to lose a relative to a malicious shooter than to a reckless driver. But I think I'd rather lose 1 relative to a shooter than 10 to drivers.
Maybe this just comes out of the fact that I've never been shot at, but I'm nearly run over by cell-phone-using drivers on a weekly basis!

On With Ron Paul, Fighting for Minnesota
The War on Drugs and the War to Blow Up Brown People for No Discernible Reason are sooooo bad that I would accept all of Paul's other kooky and terrible ideas just to be rid of them.
And actually, Paul's kooky and terrible ideas about the economy would mean that there would be no money left to fight those wars!

Thanks for your thoughts! With luck, perhaps someday I'll find the time to return to the book in light of them.

I read Female Chauvinist Pigs as opposing prescriptivism, specifically, the prescriptivism of women who say that reticence toward sexuality is necessarily anti-feminist.
But, thinking about it more and in light of other things Levy has written, perhaps one could see Levy as asking that feminists prioritize the second-wave feminist goal of having the state step in to support women in childrearing so that women can truly be equal citizens (i.e., she wants Sweden). Perhaps that is prescriptivist if it's telling other feminists what to prioritize. Perhaps I didn't spot it right away because I'm kind of inclined to agree with Levy on that point! Is that the prescriptivism you see in the book? Or is it something else?
Also, I read the book over 4 years ago now.

Yes! I also liked that book a lot. And basically everything else Levy has ever written ever.
Maria: did we read the same book?
