On One Google Books To Rule Them All?

I tried to buy The Left Hand of Darkness as an ebook the other day, but couldn't find it anywhere. It's frustrating that there are companies that will happily digitise it and sell it to me (paying Le Guin royalties, probably more than she would get from a physical bookshop) but that the author has prevented this.

I don't really understand Le Guin's objection to the scanning of books in copyright, so long as the authors have control over whether or not they are sold or distributed unlawfully.
