International Business Times checked with ExxonMobil:http://www.ibtimes.com/brooklyn-independent-library-mellow-pages-turns-down-exxonmobil-donation-oil-co-says-wasnt-actually
They say no offer was made to Mellow Pages.
According to one source, ExxonMobil has a habit of making charitable donations in Brooklyn, since the Greenpoint oil spill in Newton Creek in 1978.
I don't think ExxonMobil "got their way" by getting publicity here. If what they wanted was for everyone to stop associating them with oil spills, then they didn't achieve that.
@spanish bombs It's surprising, to say the least... According to the letter, 90% of their supporters said to take the money. I don't know. The whole story seems even more fantastical now. Hard to believe but hard to argue with.

@lonjimbo I think that there is most certainly a motive for MP to find funding, and it's possible it's a fabricated stunt, but if it came out that it were, wouldn't just about every one of the MP's patrons feel alienated? That's such a huge risk to take that could destroy a positive thing that these founders worked very hard to create...
@Chris Chan@facebook I think they're absolutely applicable to tech design, too, Chris. Henson had wonderful inventors working for him - Don Sahlin did those great explosions and Faz Fazakas was a genius with remote-control effects among other magic.
@Alex Pieske I love Saunders!
@sigerson good point! I think it's popular in Australia, too. I wonder when it started.
@turingcub That's great. There should be a directory of such places...
@UncleDeadly I'd love to know more. Please contact me through my website gordonebenezergourd.com. I want to know the truth.
