and let's not forget the Black Cat record shop or the Book Pit, located in the back of an eyeglass store with goth art crawling out of the walls. the only advertising to let you know where the Book Pit was was a sandwich board sign with a bat painted onto it. a fire chief didn't like having to pass by evidence of freakdom every day on his drive home, so Red Bank passed an ordinance to get it taken down.

the bestest keansburg crime story ever is when a lady with an old grenade threatened to pull the pin if her deaf-blind pit bull wasn't returned to her. turns out her neighbor had power of attorney and had had the dog put down.
there was a stand-off for a couple hours until the police chief offered her $50 to give him the grenade. she said, "make it $100."
i loved covering that town.
