On Man To Fall Far

@mossman Came here to post exactly this. Also they already did a test jump from a lower altitude (like 60-70% of the total I think?). Also the best footage of Kittinger's jump I've found is in this also-awesome Boards of Canada video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrBZeWjGjl8

On Why Can't Nigel Spell?

Haha, bullshit. Nobody has EVER been able to spell properly. Read some old letters by people who AREN'T professional writers or other stuff that hasn't been proofread and copyedited and it's just as littered with typos as anything today.

On A Tour Of Korean Snack Foods

H-Mart is glorious, GLOOOORIOUS. The produce, meat, and fish selection alone is enough to make me run around losing my damn mind. Abalone? Whole squid? Massive, proper scallops? (Alas, no scallop roe even there - I know there's legal issues with harvesting and selling it in the US, but I can dream, can't I?) And then of course the snack foods. Best supermarket ever.

Also, the little cafe/restaurant in the one near me makes BY FAR the best korean food I've had in the Philadelphia area.

On Who Copyedits The Copy Editors?

I read Bright Lights, Big City recently, and I started having like stress flashbacks during the parts where he's trying and failing to finish going over a really rough article in time and fretting about what stuff he's still missing, and whether whatever it is will be bad enough to get him fired. I actually had to stop reading it for a couple days.

Assistant editor job, I do not miss you.

On Happy 50th Birthday, Restaurant Criticism

I think it's pretty funny the way food critics love making a show of their populism, mostly by pointing to some out of the way hole in the wall in Buford, Iowa when asked to name their favorite example of a particular dish, but on the other hand would never consider giving any serious accolades to places like that. No, it's going to be El Bulli and Le Bernardin every time.

Which, well, nothing wrong with that, but it sort of makes it hard to accept that atmosphere and hip-ness don't play a role in the judging. I mean, CLEARLY they do, because people care about that no matter what they say, so it's only sensible that reviews take that into account, even if they don't address it directly.

Also YES the term foodie is just terrible. What was wrong with gourmet, gourmand, epicure, or any of the other dozen words for the same thing but don't sound quite so goofy?

I can't believe John Waters would do that to someone.

On The Videogame Artiste

"When Blow told me, during a typically metaphysical conversation in a park near his Berkeley office, that his windfall was “absurd,” he didn’t mean it in the whimsical “Can you believe my luck?” sense; he meant it in the philosophical, Camus-puffing-a-cigarette sense of a deeply ridiculous cosmic joke. “It just drives home how fictional money is,” Blow said, squinting against the unseasonably bright December sun. “One day I’m looking at my bank account and there’s not much money, and the next day there’s a large number in there and I’m rich. In both cases, it’s a fictional number on the computer screen, and the only reason that I’m rich is because somebody typed a number into my bank account.”"

.... Braid is a great game but, having never read any interviews with Blow before, he really sounds like THE MOST ANNOYING DUDE.

On How to "Double-Delete" Your Email, by Major Book Publishers/Defendants

I'm really excited for all the articles in publishing industry rags breathlessly explaining how there are SO MANY unseen EXPENSES in making an ebook that justify the high price (like having to pay one intern $9/hr to turn Word files into different ebook formats and put them on OverDrive).
