On The Rape of Africa: Designed in California, Made in China
'I just wonder if it’s the consumerist ethos that might be leading us astray.'
Fervid desire for new products should be curbed for everyone's sake, definitely, but better to work toward that slowly while demanding, here and now, companies to not allow/encourage mass brutalities such as rape.
I think.
Which is to say: Yes. It's murky. But look at Sierra Leone and the blood diamond outcry; it lead to change, and swift change.

'I'm not going to suggest that you can somehow make personal decisions that would have an impactâ€"such thinking is fallacious, if comforting.'
I disagree. There is plenty of action that lies within the realm of personal decision that could be effective without approval by an NGO committee.
There is plenty to do. Globalized-capitalist-ethics-nightmare be damned! This issue of forming a global consumerist coda of ethics must be addressed intently, as it's only going to reappear more often.
Fabric can be torn.
