On The Best Newspaper Staff Game in Town
Well, "dead serious" isn't quite the phrase I would use. And it's definitely not an evaluation.
But it certainly won't be the last questionable idea I have. Too bad you're not still here. I could have assigned you Foster.

On Old-School Letter Writers? Way Worse Than Blog Commenters
Most of the ones I've received with actual return addresses have been mailed from one of our country's fine penitentiary facilities.

On American Girl is an Argument Against Having Girls
If the argument here is against expensive large products that only fit in ginormous suburban houses, there are worse offenders. Fisher Price and Barbie, for example.
I think every house in our neighborhood had a giant blue/orange/yellow FP playhouse in the backyard that looked vaguely like a Jeff Koons project gone awry. And somewhere in China there's probably an entire town devoted entirely to the production of fuschia plastic so that little American girls can have their very own life-size Barbie anything.

On Get Ready To Call Daily!
I will cop to liking Carlson's Esquire stuff. He's a good storyteller. His best-known piece is probably this one, wherein he goes to Africa with Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton:

On Biblical Principles Just As Effective For Finance As Everything Else
There's a good counterpoint in the December Atlantic by Hanna Rosin titled, "Did Christianity Cause the Crash?" It's about rich mega-church ministers who convinced their parishioners that it was okay to spend well beyond their means because "god will provide". Turns out, he didn't.

On Half Baked, with Nic Musolino: Eggnog
I sent my epileptic chihuahua, Lola, home with Nic to Ohio for holidays. She's on barbiturates for seizures and steroids for allergies. So now I guess I can assume that she's currently stoned, 'roided up... and drunk. (Hi, babe!)

On Will the Committee on Right-Thinking Blogging Have Secret Blog Tribunals???
Eh, I'm usually pretty skeptical about this sort of thing, too, but I figure, we're developing those sort of standards internally anyway and it's useful to know what everyone else considers best practice. I also think that if The Atlantic, Slate, NY mag, Esquire, The Observer and so on all adopt the same protocols, those standards have a better shot of being promulgated throughout the industry. (And if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. No one's gonna lose any sleep over it.)
