On Who's Afraid Of Lana Del Rey?
@Multiphasic The GQ interview you linked to actually makes me like her more. She's at least straightforward and honest about which parts of the machine she controls and which parts are done by the record label.

On Happy National Emergency Alert Day!
Can I just say that these "We're all gonna die" posts make me feel less alone? I think I would like to have a "let's drink until we cry" night with Alex Balk. Lest you think I'm crazy: don't worry, I've TOTALLY had a bunch of those before....
Hmm....

On Why Yoga Can Be So Irritating (Although You Should Go Anyway!)
@Dani I've been to a yoga class where the instructor sings and it is horrible.

On America’s Korean Adoptees, Part 4: Return To The Motherland
I'm half-Korean, and sometimes feel sort of estranged from my Korean side. I want to visit Korea, but I'm afraid that Koreans will disapprove of my inability to speak Korean (as confirmed above!), that they'll look down on me for being half (I read an article once about how half-Koreans are second-class citizens in Korea). Basically, this article did nothing to assuage my fears, but it was an excellent article! So strange to feel a part of one's history is foreign (ha) to you.
ETA: I'm not trying to equate my experience with those of the Korean adoptees -- I know that it must be a much tougher, stranger experience for them. Just that this article brought up some feelings for me that I felt like sharing.

On The Horrors And Pleasures Of The Columbia House Music Club In Six Albums
Desperate to fill my 12-CD quota, I randomly picked The Smiths' "The Queen is Dead" because I liked the picture of the girl on the cover. It worked out well for me, although I probably had a gloomier adolescence than I otherwise would have. Also, years earlier my dad was introduced to Bob Dylan through the Columbia House Music Club. Moral: Occasionally scams work in one's favor?

On What's Invisible At Harvard: A Conversation
@Matt: Harvard is supposed to be where the smartest people go. When you get there, you find out that it is actually where the richest people go. You are uncomfortable for the rest of your life.
ETA: You can also substitute "America" for "Harvard" and "succeed" for "go" and it still works.

On What's Invisible At Harvard: A Conversation
@lotsoftreble: I don't know. I went to college; from these accounts, Harvard does not seem like just college.

On What's Invisible At Harvard: A Conversation
@Nabonwe Yesyesyesyes. I was totally with them until they started complaining about discussion section. Your high school didn't let you discuss what you were learning, so that means it must be a waste of time??? ???
Also, another good thing about discussion section is that it's where your cool grad student T.A. can disabuse the class of some of your brilliant-but-crazy professor's more...dubious claims. Yay, sanity checks.

On Peach Honey Chamomile Ice Pops (With Bourbon!)
If I had a daughter named Peach Honey Chamomile she would be beloved by all/taken for a Southerner. Doubly so (for both) if her name were Peach Honey Chamomile Bourbon.

On Breakfast Hotdish, Minnesota Style
@Poubelle I specifically came here to extol the virtues of tater-tot hotdish. My Minnesotan husband introduced me to it, and it is basically my favorite. Tater tots, ground beef, cream of mushroom soup (of course)...amahzing.
