Oliver has no business anywhere but No. 22, thankyouverymuch.

On Elements of Trolldom: Katie Roiphe and Pico Iyer
Holy cow. That Iyer piece is like if Joan Didion were a man, and also 150 years old.

On A Tale of Two Media Columnists
Speaking of terrible columns, don't miss Friedman's from yesterday. Oh boy. Even as far as Times columns goes, this was a towering achievement. "There will be a viable third party! It will come from the INTERNET. Guaranteed, just because!" I can't remember the last time I saw someone waste Times column inches so aggressively, or with such completely fatuous arguments.
(OK, fine. I can remember. It was the last time D. Brooks talked sociology. But still.)

On Is This a Summer Without a Song of the Summer?
I would dispute your chronology in a couple of places. First, Empire State of Mind wasn't a summer 2009 jam. The two singles from Blueprint 3 released prior to the album drop (on Sept. 11) were "Run This Town" and "Death of AutoTune." No one had really heard ESoM at that point, and it wasn't released as a single until the Fall.
Also, "Fuck You" was clearly last summer's song.

On Harry Potter and the Deathly Epilogue
Yeah, the version in the book reads like an aggressively awful fan fiction.
