Every discipline has dozens of scientific journals filled with the latest research alongside ads for cool equipment that scientists will tear out and pester their university administrations to buy for them. A scientist's career depends on publishing research papers in these journals. And like anything having to do with media, there's a hierarchy: The average scientist wouldn't dream of submitting her paper to Nature any more than the average freelance writer would pitch The New Yorker.
