On A Conversation With Chad Harbach, Author Of "The Art Of Fielding"
One can quite see the uneasy hand of author Chad Harbach as he attempts, and fails, to marry a ruined sporting game with the artful craft of writing. His cast of characters are unoriginal, whiny, middling sorts that one will encounter at an unoriginal coffee bar or a middling pub while slavishly patrolling Park Slope, Brooklyn.
That's what this extended short story is all about: Harbach's experiences as a Brooklyn carpetbagger and editorship at "N+1 Literary Magazine," which isn't so much literature, but a tiresome attempt at same. His awkward, banal presentation of "the game" is a five-hundred plus page embarrassment and the ball and the bat of it is as foreign to the author as is good prose.
