Why I Am Leaving the Muppets

From time to time, we offer our space to individuals with something to say and nowhere to say it. On the occasion of this week's release of the recent film The Muppets on DVD (a "DVD" is what they had before Netflix Instant) and the announcement that a new Muppets movie is expected soon, here is M.B. Cluckerton.

Today is my last day at Disney Muppet Global. After almost 30 years crammed in the back of Fozzie’s car—starting out as a summer intern at Fraggle Rep in Williamstown, then doing yellow-chick understudy work at Muppets Dubai—I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and salmonella-ridden as I [...]

Tweeting Yourself To Death

First Virginia Heffernan announced she hated her iPhone; now the NYT mag columnist on all things webby is totally over Twitter. And she goes to a dark place! "I used to think that writers on the Web who feared hate mail and carping bloggers were just being old-fashioned and precious. Shortly before he died, Mr. Armstrong told reporters and friends that his myriad problems—financial, marital and personal—were aggravated, if not caused, by the show. This is not hard to see. He was playing a dour jerk and bankrolling the production that was meant to prop up his wife with his dwindling fortune. No wonder his finances and marriage fell apart." —Somehow [...]

The Internet: A Series Of Little Boxes On The Hillside

This week's edition of Virginia Heffernan's "The Medium" is a meditation on what she calls "the death of the open Web" thanks to the rise of The App, the walled garden where content is approved (and profit-shared in) by Apple. An interesting point! But it's based on a fairly flawed premise: "In the migration of dissenters from the 'open' Web to pricey and secluded apps, we're witnessing urban decentralization, suburbanization and the online equivalent of white flight," Heffernan writes. Which, uh… not for nothing, but online culture has been all about settling in with demographically similar enclaves — the term "eternal September," which dates all the way [...]
