A Short Story from the County Board Meeting in Arlington, VA

A Guide To Richmond, VA, By a Guy Who Lived There from '93 to '97

Thanks to the college basketball championships, in which both Richmond, Virginia-based teams (Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond) performed admirably, we had cause to ponder, "Not sure why people are so into Richmond, Virginia." That's a reasonable question! Richmond is a mostly busted-ass city on the banks of the James River that's played host to such luminaries as George Allen, and also George Allen's wife—what's her name, the one who married George Allen. It's best known as the capital of the Confederacy, and, as many of the old-school Richmondites—by which I mean the "racist" ones—will probably tell you, that's basically where the city peaked. The Way We Minimize Slavery Now

"A textbook distributed to Virginia fourth-graders says that thousands of African Americans fought for the South during the Civil War — a claim rejected by most historians but often made by groups seeking to play down slavery's role as a cause of the conflict. The passage appears in 'Our Virginia: Past and Present,' which was distributed in the state's public elementary schools for the first time last month. The author, Joy Masoff, who is not a trained historian but has written several books, said she found the information about black Confederate soldiers primarily through Internet research..." The last line of this article is pretty killer.

New Day In Virginia Looks A Lot Like Very Old Day

Virginia's governor is making a few changes: "When Bob McDonnell ran for governor of Virginia, he insisted-emphatically at times-that he was no culture warrior.... In the four months since he was sworn in as governor, McDonnell has rescinded protections for gay and lesbian state employers, declared a 'Christian Heritage Week' (devoted to perpetuating the myth that the Founders created a distinctly 'Christian nation'), declared a 'Confederate History Month' (with no mention of slavery), and has now reinstated a policy giving free license to State Police chaplains to be sectarian." And there's plenty more!

Maybe West Virginia And Virginia Should Switch Places

"Virginia has been making big leaps lately in the category of general craziness. We all remember the Legislature's heroic work in passing a bill to protect Virginia citizens from having microchips planted in their bodies against their will. And that the sponsor said he was concerned the chips could be a 'mark of the beast' that would be used by the Antichrist at the end of days." READ MORE

Let's Celebrate The Last Civil War Before The Next One Starts

People are all upset with Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell because he signed a proclamation celebrating Confederate History Month. The crux of their concern seems to be that the language in the proclamation makes no mention of slavery, but let's be fair: The Confederacy wasn't about slavery. It was about raising up arms against the government of the nation because certain states were upset by the results of a legitimate election. The whole point of the thing was the treason. The slave-owning was more of a side benefit.

Virginia Threatened By Scary Ethnic Types

Did you know that a tiny Jew and his greasy dago buddies are trying to RAPE THE STATE OF VIRGINIA? That seems to be the message of this NRA commercial in support of Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell. Sure, it's never bad politics to attack New York City, but even Virginia has HBO now. These people have seen "The Sopranos." They know what highly-stylized mob brutality looks like. Isn't there a danger that they'll be more insulted by the crappy production values and terrible acting in this ad than convinced by its contentions? Seems risky!

Virginia Republican's Plans Include Armed Insurrection

Meet Catherine Crabill, candidate for the Republican nomination from Virginia's 99th District to serve in the Old Dominion's lower chamber. Catherine's a fan of Judeo-Christian values, the rants of Rick Santelli, and FOMENTING VIOLENT REVOLUTION IN THE EVENT THAT DEMOCRATIC METHODS PROVE INEFFECTIVE. Watch your ass, Michele Bachmann: I don't think even you can bring this kind of crazy.
