Breaking Matt Bai Housing Update Just In!
When Matt Bai, a Times reporter and Yankees fan in his early 40s with two children, wanted to buy a new house, the mortgage brokers laughed at him! But he had perfect credit, and had only bought his last home six years ago! (It was a "center-hall colonial on a corner lot three blocks from the subway and American University.") Then he found out that his nanny had a very bad mortgage on her house, the payments of which were 75% of her income. And so he bought a new house, a "spacious, if deteriorated split-level," even though the counter tops were ugly, with a nice, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage. And then he wrote about all of this at work.
Join The Official Awl NCAA Tournament Bracket! (Seriously)
That's right hoops (that's slang for basketball) fans, it's March and it's about time we go mad for it! At the suggestion of one of our loyal readers, I have created a group on ESPN and have forced both Choire and Alex to fill out a bracket, much to their chagrin (and, in Choire's case, total bafflement, followed by blind guessing), and now it's your turn-to fill out a bracket. But wait, we're not just playing for pride and bragging rights here. READ MORE
5-Year-Old Fashion Blogger Freaks Out Crazies, Stupids
The Internet really is getting stupider. The gals over at Racked had to explain to their outraged commenters that their 5-year-old fashion week correspondent was kind of a parody of the very real weird teen blogger fashion world mania. Their commenters actually went a little nuts: "Can we please have bloggers and editorials by grown ups, real editors, with actual jobs, and, gasp, life experience. Maybe women and men? Over 20 years old? PLEASE?" AND! "I guess your blog cant pay enough to hire an adult writer to blog abt fashion week. I wont be visiting your site again." At least the 5-year-old was using apostrophes?
The Golden Globes: Oh Yeah, 'Little Dorrit'!
It's the only category at awards season that anyone cares about-Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television at the Golden Globes! Now, if you feel as I do, you understand entirely that these should be two separate categories, as they are completely different undertakings! (The Emmys understands this.) And while I have a lot of respect for Michael Sucsy's Grey Gardens for HBO, it is so obvious that the hearts and minds of America are all behind the BBC/WGBH Boston co-production of Little Dorrit, the values of which we have noted here previously. I SAID "OBVIOUSLY," so GET IN LINE, PEOPLE. What's his name, the Hot Mr. Darcy, should clinch the winningness. Also there are some other categories at the Golden Globes but we weren't really paying attention. Who cares. READ MORE
"Is The American Dream Over?" Some Say Yes! Others, No! Some Shrug
Times bloggers Gail Collins and David Brooks are getting into it over, you know, the future of America and stuff. I love that they have, I guess, iChat now! Gail: When the bubble burst last year, I didn't see it as the end to our economic power. But I did wonder if it was the end of the American Dream, or at least the version we've come to regard as practically a national birthright. What do you think? If you have an encouraging response, I am prepared to embrace it wholeheartedly." David: [No Intelligible Answer].
