Odd Future Raps With The Roots Last Night

Two members of the Los Angeles rap collective Odd Future appeared with The Roots on the Jimmy Fallon show last night. Odd Future are also known as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, and sometimes they switch the W" from "wolf" with the "G" from "golf" so that it's "Golf Wang." This clip of their performance lets you know why so many people are so excited about them. They're maybe about as punk rock as rap has ever got. And, among other things, they're really good.

Bruce Springsteen And The E-Street Band And The Roots, "Because The Night"

Bruce Springsteen appeared on the Jimmy Fallon show last night, and played "Because the Night" with who-woulda-thunk-it backing from a supergroup combo of the E-Street Band the Roots. It was a little tepid in the beginning, but at the end, it got very rocking! READ MORE

The Roots And Ice Cube, "Straight Outta Compton"

Ice Cube was on Jimmy Fallon's show a couple weeks ago and before taping began, he joined the house band the Roots to warm up the audience with a live version of N.W.A's 1988 classic, "Straight Outta Compton." Drummer Questlove put a video of the performance up on his Twitvid account last night. It's of a very different feel than the original. The Roots' MC Black Thought and guitarist Kirk Douglas wear suits (!) as they handle Ren and Eazy-E's verses, respectively. And the avoidance of profanity is jarring. (Black Thought raps that he'll "find a good piece of mush/And go up in it," which is far more offensive, actually, than the real word that goes there.) But still, as it's own thing, musically, like Questlove says at the end, Damn, that shit was dope.

Erykah Badu Sings "Window Seat" On Jimmy Fallon

Erykah Badu brought her top hat and silver swim cap to Jimmy Fallon's show last night to sing her new single "Window Seat" with old friends the Roots-who, you'll remember, made much of the music on her first album, Baduizm, way back in 1996. She also wore a tan leather jacket over a very tight Wonder Woman costume that showed very much the shape of her body. But don't say anything about that because she is awesome.

P Is For The People Who Can't Understand

So Jay-Z's booked to perform "Empire State of Mind" before the opening game of the world series at Yankee Stadium. Hard to beat something that makes that much sense. A big, bombastic anthem about the bright lights of the big city to match the big, bombastic Bronx Bombers and the bright lights of their big new stadium. (Even as that googolzillion-dollar monument to avarice and ostentation is already falling apart.) Alicia Keys on the chorus and everything. A-Rod's bound to pop a boner. The Evil Empire is stacking the deck. READ MORE
