Flashback! Sexy Lady Tells All, Sells Self, In 1997

Chris Rovzar, editor of Vanity Fair's website, just found this delightful item in the VF archives, from February of 1997. (Ancient history? Or yesterday? YOU DECIDE. Either way, it was before irony died.) That year was the publication of the excellent collection of New York Observer columns, called Sex and the City. Some notable things about this picture:

1. The photo caption: "Candace Bushnell enjoys posing seductively to promote herself."

2. The photo itself: Man. There is a lot to talk about regarding how women memoirists are presented/allow themselves to be presented/are coerced into being presented in the book and magazine industry but this one really takes [...]

Just In Case, Keep Fingers Crossed for 'Sex and the City 3D'

Okay so it's not impossible that there might be a Sex and the City 3. Is 3D too much to ask ?

New 'Sex and the City 2' Trailer Is Confusing, Bananas, Weird!

NOW WITH EXTRA AIDAN! And… not much else? Let's just say they're holding their plot cards close to their collective enhanced chests. This worked with SatC 1! But you know how sequels are… we want bigger, faster, more! So far, as near as I can tell, the plot of this movie is identical to Jackass 2. (Maybe Sex and the City 3: The Embalming will be in 3D though!)

Talking To Lena Dunham About Being A "Girl"

It may feel like "Girls" has been on the air for months already, but the series actually doesn’t premiere on HBO until April 15th. Its creator, writer and star is Lena Dunham, about whom, if you’re reading this, you probably already have an opinion—although it's difficult to come up with an opinion or observation about Dunham that she has not already anticipated, heard or joked about herself. Her 2010 feature, Tiny Furniture, released when she was 23, was just added to the Criterion Collection. Now there's "Girls," a comedy about four 20-something women puzzling out adulthood in the city, executive produced by Judd Apatow. Dunham and I met recently [...]

Why Everyone Hates The New 'Sex and the City' Movie

As a mostly disinterested observer I've found the overwhelming backlash against the new Sex and the City movie to be somewhat surprising. After all, it's not as if there's any radical departure from the series' formula that fans might find upsetting: The show always trafficked in the most grotesque stereotypes of shallow femininity; what made it so culturally noteworthy was the willingness of women to not only buy into its overt misogyny but embrace it. Even the show's greatest detractors would grudgingly admit an odd fascination with it. And yet we seem to have reached a moment where a growing number of former fans find themselves disgusted [...]

Everything Old Is New Again at 'Sex and the City 2' Casting (Except the Louboutins)

Reports a lady reader! "I just happened down 18th street, between 6th and 7th, where there is the casting call for the next 'Sex in the City.' Very motley assortment of ladies, big, small, beautiful, ugly, thin, even fat. Some look perfect and some are 'OH, honey, let me help you with that.' But they *ALL* got the shoes right (huge, bulbous and/or scary looking). The funniest part is that at first blush they all look like trannies–it is Chelsea, after all!" Oh how this takes us back to the kinder, gentler years of 2006! Also? They have been there all day! Guess unemployment is still high.

A Little History Of Red Shoes

This past April, Christian Louboutin filed a lawsuit against couture competitor Yves Saint Laurent, claiming that the legendary fashion house had committed trademark infringement when it manufactured and sold shoes with a ruby-red sole. On Monday, the NY Post reported that YSL’s representatives had argued in court documents that the red sole cannot be considered proprietary to Louboutin: "Red outsoles are a commonly used ornamental design feature in footwear, dating as far back as the red shoes worn by King Louis XIV in the 1600s and the ruby red shoes that carried Dorothy home in The Wizard of Oz.”

Historically speaking, this is true! Red shoes—if not always [...]

"Sex And The City" Continues To Inspire Sad Ladies, Hack Writers

The flurry of trend stories about the imminent release of the ode to consumption Sex And The City 2 will not cease until this movie really fulfills its Ishtar… For Chicks potential, will it? Today's New York Post has yet another profile of four women who are Living The Lifestyle, as it were, only there's a crucial twist: The ladies profiled are not friends, but they are all, by the punishingly youthful standards of Post trend stories, ancient. Or, sorry, as the Post puts it, "living proof that the Big Apple is still the sexiest city of all – for women of all ages." (Like 40! Gasp!) Each [...]
