31 Days of Horror: "Street Trash"
In honor of the approach of Halloween, I'm going to be showing bits from a horror movie each day throughout October. I'm a big fan of horror movies and even if they're terrible there's usually something of interest going on... even if it isn't intentional. As the month goes on, the movies will get better and better; we're starting with camp and trash, pretty much, and moving into the wonderful. A note: I know you're a grown-up and you know what's going on but sometimes people can think they're a lot more ready for violence and offensiveness than they actually are. A lot of these entries are going to have descriptions of graphic violence, homophobia, sexual violence and stuff of that ilk that is so native to the genre. READ MORE
The Margaret Mead of the North American Weirdo: Christopher Owens and the Children of God
Given the passion expressed for girl music on this site, I suppose it's not too much an affront to my masculinity to confess my obsession with the admittedly unmanly band Girls. Their debut record "Album" is forty minutes of melancholy bliss, late night break-up songs that will make you feel like a teenager suffering from a his first encounter with heartbreak. My introduction to the band's back-story came through Pitchfork (shut up!) whose review featured a little biographical information on the band's leader, Christopher Owens: "Christopher Owens grew up in the Children of God. His older brother died as a baby because the cult didn't believe in medical attention. His dad left. He and his mother lived around the world, and the cult sometimes forced his mother to prostitute herself." READ MORE

Racism is hot. The media smells the blood in the water and is (finally) making some good cases about how anti-Obama sentiment is tied to racism. Some, not so good. Maureen Dowd pretty much called everyone opposed to Obama a racist. But race is a very small factor in what's going on. READ MORE
